He gained that designation by taking classes from the Utah State University extension service, and is a very friendly and personable man six-ye- ar who thoroughly enjoys his work. Children Can Learn Gardening Children love to plant gardens and watch them grow. Children need to learn that plants are living things just as they are. A child can not see himself grow because he grows slowly, but within a few days he can see the growth of a plant. Children can learn responsibility by having their own space in the garden to plant and care for. Let the children help prepare the soil for planting then provide seeds that will be easy to plant. Teach how to make forrows and to plant the seeds, then to water and weed the garden. The children will be thrilled to see flowers blooming in their own garden or to pick their own peas or radishes to share with the family. They even have the opportunity to enter their harvest in the Davis County Fair in August. If parents need help in teach- ing their children, they may club. He fertilizes from a compost pile of old leaves, grass cuttings, and leftover prunings. Twice each fall he tills this compost pile into his soil and again as soon as weather permits in the spring. Mabey enjoys trying new things. He raises his own herbs for cooking along with asparagus and rhubarb. are Chrysanthemums He Mabeys specialty. grows the garden variety and enjoys visiting garden shows to puck up new ideas to help him in his work. In the fall when the grasshopper eggs are produced, Mabey will till the frost into the ground about six inches to kill the eggs. Frost also helps break up the soil, said Mabey. After cutting the lawn, Mabey takes the clippings and spreads them over his patio in the sun to dry. He then uses them to cover his newly planted carrot and lettuce seeds. Mabey likes to plant from three to five varieties of crops together so they mature at different times. A scent or odor is given off by plants and when a garden is planted in single crop, root-ton- said. For the first and second year, After the plant has roduced buds and immature fruit, cut it back to the main branch. This helps the plant to put all its efforts into growing in size before it starts to. produce good mature fruit, he said. A home remedy for growing good pepper plants is to place three packages of book matches that have been pulled apart in a hole in garden soil. Put one inch of soil over the top of the matches, then place the pepper plant into the hole with a paper collar on top. When the blossoms start coming, take teaspoon epsom salts to one gallon of water and spray on the foliage. This will help keep cut worms away, Mabey said. Now is an ideal time to take slips from your flowers for transplanting, he advised. This is conspicuous on the product label as a series of three In ornumbers such as the these percent der represent nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the product. The weight of the actual fertilizer in the bag, box, or bottle (if liquid) is also listed. Thus, by multiplying the percent of the nutrient by the weight of the fertilizer, the exact amount of nutrient in the product can be easily calculated. For examples, 20 nitrogen in fifty pounds of fertilizer As equals one pound of nitrogen.ferindicated above that same tilizer might contain 5 phosphorous, this would equal pound. Put these on the northwest or east side of your house for the best growing results, Mabey said. After 10 to 14 days, the plants have grown their own roots and you can transplant to a larger area. Mabey grows all the vegetables and flowers used by himself and his four married children and their families on a x garden. In his garden he grows potatoes, carrots, cantalope, squash, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, and peas. For watering, Mabey uses a soaker hose and an overhead hose. He hand checks his soil for dryness before watering. Besides working in his yard, Mabey gives lectures on gardening.
