If I am elected my top priorities will be to distribute the minutes of the school board meetings to the citizens of the Moroni area every month, and will share the opinions and ideas of citizens with the board. Also, I want to communicate regularly with board members from other school districts in the state and nation. Finding out what works and doesnt work in other districts will provide a catalyst for success in our district. 3. What single greatest strength will you bring to this office if elected? The greatest strength I can bring to this office is the strength of the masses. I know that if I bring the ideas of Moronis citizens and board members from other districts, it will carry more weight than just sharing what I think. 4. What distinguishes you 2 3. What single greatest strength will you bring to this office if elected? The single greatest strength I would bring is experience. I have served on many boards, worked in the community, and owned and operated my own business for many years. I have learned to work with people to get things done well. Hales is a partner with his two brothers in Hales Sand and Gravel, where he has been employed full time since 1974. 1. What do you see as being most serious issue facing the the school district? One of the most serious problems we face is insufficient funding. In our small rural schools it is difficult to fully staff our faculty with qualified professionals. Short funding and a need for teachers to have two or more qualified areas of study makes it challenging for districts with small schools. 2. In order of importance, s t & y r- r Mica Talbot from your opponent? The greatest distinguishing factor between my opponent and me is that I have been in contact with Moronis citizens since March. I have been distributing the minutes of all of board meetings to them, and I am committed to this throughout my tenure. what will be your top priorities if elected? I will try to obtain sufficient funding to provide a education for the students. I will support the district administration in its efforts to provide students with the most qualified instructors possible, and in its building maintenance program. well-round- ed 3. What single greatest strength will you bring to this office, if elected? Experience I have been serving for almost twelve years as a board member, and have been a member of the North Sevier High School community council as well. My experience as a businessman has taught me that you cannot have everything you want, when you want it: some things you need to wait for, and often times budget for. 4. What is the greatest weakness you will have to overcome in relation to the office you are seeking? As school board president I have had several opportunities to speak in front of large groups, but I get nervous. As I gain experience I get better, but I dont necessarily enjoy it. 5. What distinguishes you from your opponent? I have a sense of community, having been a lifelong member of Sevier County and having two children go through our school system. My concerns are much the same as yours. I believe I can better represent our communitys values and wishes. James Kennon James Kennon is a professional firefighter. He also supervised a cabinetry shop before beginning his career in education. He obtained a bachelors degree in vocational education and a bachelors degree in liberal studies to get a teaching credential in elementary education. Kennon taught grades 8 for 16 years, and has developed to manage well so we dont have to cut programs. 2. In order of importance, what will be your top priorities if elected? My priorities will be to be fiscally responsible. We need roll up our sleeves to see that No Child Left Behind achieves its objectives. We need to ask volunteers to participate to make the reading program effective. We need to hire good teachers, get them the resources they need to be effective, and support them in continually upgrading their skills. Tom Hales 5-- North Sanpete District I tion. The most serious issue facing us is communication. Reaching out to the parents and the public is a top priority, because the lack of communication is destructive to both parties. 2. In order of importance, what will be your top priorities if elected? My top priority would be to establish a program designed to communicate with parents and the public. When students realize a line of communication exists between school and home, they are more motivated. Another top priority would be to prepare students for the world of work. With new requirements now being in place, a num- ber of students will not be going to college. I have a degree in vocational education that would be helpful in making decisions on methods to prepare all students for adult life. Even those students on a college track can use these skills to help them present themselves in an oral interview. 3. What single greatest strength will you bring to this office if elected? The greatest strength I will bring to the office of school board member is my experience teaching a number of grade levels and subjects. I have taught in second and fourth grade classrooms, and a number of years were spent teaching fifth grade. My services were needed in grades 6, 7, and 8 to James Kennon teach core classes as well as math and history. During these years I also taught woodshop for two middle schools and a high school. 4. What distinguishes you from your opponent? The multiple experiences of my three careers have made for a rewarding life. Education needs to be varied and serve the needs of all students. One size does not fit all, and I bring the success I have found in education to the Board of Education. While raising my children, I was involved with them in school. I read with them, supported their activities, and helped them to become capable people. Now that they have left home I would like to help the young people in the community by serving as a member of the school board. Sevier County Planning and Zoning Board. I love the schools in the Sevier School District and would like to see our students receive the best education possible, says Johnson. I would like to see a greater emphasis on academics and giving our students the same teachers and administration in our schools. I have been concerned about the declining graduation rates.
