Show SAW JOSEPH BRIGHAM CYPRESS jackson county florida september 1896 we take pleasure in penning a few oi of our experiences since conference held may and aist elder brigham haslam and myself were appointed to labor in gadsden and jackson counties among saints and fri friends eDds and can say that since that mat time our sorrows have been few and our joys many one item we will mention may be of interest to your many readers on entering the little city of quincy the county seat of gadsden county we in line of our duty called on the editor of the quincy hebald and found him to be an aged gentleman of about seventy on introducing ourselves we learned that his name was W W keep he said he went to utah in early days in a company led by parley P pratt and remembers well brigham young acting as governor of utah he related some early reminiscences of utah to us which were interesting one we will mention he says he be went to the home of brigham young with his feet badly frozen at one time and stopped and was in the care of brigham for six weeks while there a man by name of washington griffith died in governor youngs care and governor young gave mr keep a piccolo that belonged to griffith mr keep has the treasured instrument today and showed it to usi us it shows its age as well as does its worthy owner mr keep talked freely with us and with high spirits he is now hardly able to get around owing to being affected in one side with paralysis but looks bright and cheerful and expects to visit salt lake city in the spring he also he i the only one among many living down here that can say he has seen the face of the prophet joseph smith our labors have been crowned with reasonable success in getting before the people and we are very greatly en cou raged with our situation traveling as the seventy of former days dam we often find ourselves in the mansions of the most popular class of the country who are eager to hear what we have to say some time ago we had bad the pleasure of being entertained by the chaplain of the state asylum who deserves praise for his hospitality he remarked when we bid him good morning that he had learned something and hoped we would meet meet again thus the great beam of prejudice is being rapidly removed by the divine plan and a better feeling seems to prevail than in former years BRIGHAM HASLAM G W ROGERS |
