Show PREACHING THE GOSPEL WATERLOO iowa february 1897 on the of august augu st 1896 in company with nine other elders I 1 left home and beloved friends in the valleys ot of the mountains and after a two days journey through laiying scenes of mountains and plains arrived at kansas city missouri there I 1 spent a profitable week in visiting places of interest one ot of which was the temple lot at independence in the meantime while at kansas city I 1 had the pleasure of joining with our beloved president deritt elder samuel R spencer and other elders in holding m meetings ee ti ings upon upon the street corners where the people were going to and fro in large crowds when the elders would commence their strain of beautiful singing the people would forget about their rush and began to collect to see what was in progress then to their surprise they were listen og ng to a discourse on the true and everlasting gospel which would hold them spellbound for upwards of an hour after meeting closed some would come and shake hands with the elders and ask some questions upon the gospel of truth which has been restored to earth these questions were answered with satisfaction on the streets of kansas city is where I 1 first sounded my voice in defence of this great and mighty work but I 1 can assure you I 1 did not keep the people spellbound very long for I 1 spoke briefly nevertheless being called upon I 1 felt it my duty to tell them who I 1 was after spending anding a pleasant week at kansas city with the elders I 1 left ae 1 there on tenth ot augustin comp company abir s with elders christopher burton and 1 edward liddle the former of kaysville s and the latter of salt lake city utah they were to open up a new field in jefferson city where I 1 bade them farewell and continued on my journey to salem dent county missouri where I 1 was appointed to labor in company with elder edward W laird of mountain 1 D dell e 41 utah we arrived at salem at 11 5 3 30 0 p m I 1 made my way to the po post st office expecting to receive a card there informing me where I 1 would find my companion to my disa disappointment appointment there was no mail tor for me Ip I 1 then came to the conclusion that my companion had bad not arrived I 1 felt somewhat lonely in the world being alone but while studying over what to do the spirit said retire into the woods and offer oner up a prayer and dedicate the city unto god which I 1 did after prayer 1 was led to a house where I 1 went in and partook of a nice cool drink ot of water which was offered me by the lady ot of the house houm I 1 was then asked to take a chair chichi I 1 accepted I 1 talked with her io for 1 r sometime telling her who I 1 was I 1 also gave her a tract which she read we were just getting interested in a gospel conversation when tor my disappointment she told me she would like to keep me over night but could not on account of scarcity 0 of bed room she directed mf meto a place where I 1 went and found a good supper ready for me which I 1 en 10 loy ed edthe the best kin kind but lol lo and behold they could not keep me all night the gentleman of the house took me and introduced trod me to the hotel proprietor etor and told him to find me a good bed i nd adgive give me breakfast and he would foot the bill I 1 idelt felt like all praise belonged to the lord for I 1 of myself could do noth ng I 1 remained in the city tr trading acting and visiting the people for one week I 1 was then joined by elder laird and the weather being good we started tracei trading nt among the firme farmers arso meeting with good success although at times time elder sElder laird suffered very much from sickness he tried very hard to overcome his illness that he might remain and fill his bis missions but the chills and fever caused him to become so weak that he be could not travel so we were instructed to go to kansas city which we did elder laird did not seem to improve any so I 1 the same day that we arrived in kansas city retook betook he took the train to return to his home in mountain dell utah I 1 remained in kansas city eight days tr trading acting I 1 then went to hampton lowa iowa on arriving there I 1 met elder otto johnsoa Job John sou president of the iowa conference we labored together one week in hampton the elders then gathered at hampton that place being appointed for the conference all the elders came in feeling well vell and enjoying the spirit of their mission conference was held in the baily opera house where we all met with our beloved president elder samuel G spencer the spirit of god was as great ly manifested throughout our meeting fr and we received such instruction that al J ways will be a comfort to those woo jhc were there present at the conference after conference we separated to toc lo 10 to our new fields of labor my cola J panion elder eider conrad J smith and I 1 came to waterloo iowa 1 I arrived ha at two a am m we remained ned la in ai tiie depot until morning after dedicating the city unto the lord we called on ake g mayor and the le leading di n papers of the town leaving our car cards and tracts they received us kindly and in their they notified the people we were papers here ficie and told them what our business bubines of the articles article published some was a also iso of faith we vi were bere rere kindly received b by y some of the leading hotels which gave necessary comforts of life we if the have made many good friends and hope to make some converts before we leave elder smith let left t me
