| Show AN OUTRAGE highhanded proceedings reported from cache county the cofan logan journal of feb contains the following ol 01 lowing we ve are informed formed ia that the following business was transacted in the commissioners court on last saturday between 12 and 2 pm mr H P hansen of hyrum who had been caught the night before at about 11 pm p in at the residence of julius sorensen by the deputies and chained ato to mr Soren soH who was also arrested on the charge of obstructing ting the officers until sunday morning doming were brought to logaa loaa to give bonas bonds for their appearance before h his Is honor 0 C goodwin for trial the first was bound over to appear on saturday at all 1 p m and mr sorensen on monday at 1 4 pm at which time he appeared and the case was continued the charge against Mr Hausen uaen was the usual one unlawful cohabitation but besides this crime the defendants social and financial circumstances were taken into consideration and his bonds were placed at 2000 and aad those of hit his alleged plural wife miss randa olsen at counsel for mr hansen sala said the bonds were higher than usual but he be was was informed bp this honor that the bonds in these cases might be raised to or even according to the religious social and 4 lancial tawa standing ol 01 otliffe ithe defendant in community the crime or penalty seemed to have no weight in the matter and was not mentioned his bonds were furnished by I 1 C Tho reser and A M nielsen of hyrum mr sorensens Soren sens bonds were fixed at 1000 4 T nielsen and L K larsen also of hyrum being his sureties I 1 mr john G wilson an old veteran of hyrum was also nabbed sunday morning and appeared at the same time and place and gave bonds in the sum of 1 1000 for his appearance for trial on friday next at all I 1 pm on the going charge his sureties were 1 U C and A M Nl nielson Niela elson cn A bond of was also required for the appearance pe arance of a witness in this case which was furnished by A T abelsen and L K larsen on the above the journal says the treatment that mr hans P hansen and mr air sorensen So reuBen received at the hands of the deputies at hyrum on saturday evening last was simply an outrage marshal dyer in his own in ecrett and to his own credit should in vestie vesti zate ate it there is no excuse tor for uffing pe peaceable actable citizens who are arrested on an unlawful cohabitation complaint p 1 faint if men before proven guilty a ll 11 t y of any offense and without offering resi resistance stence to an arrest are to be treated in a contemptuous manner to please the whims of a deputy then something should be lone done in the cause of justice and if the charge is true trae that one of the deputies was the worse for strong drink the more the reason for complaints against him and his bis associate all men imen are entitled to fair consideration and treatment at the hands bands of officers of the state none should be subjected to unnecessary indignity they should be deemed innocent of crime until proven guilty when arrested on any charge they aboud receive courteous treatment from the officers when officers step out of their place and assume to be the masters of the people instead of their servants some means should be devised to teach them their proper place and duties |
