Show irrigation SCHEME another extensive irrigation scheme la Is now under way in southwestern arizona the plan is to dam the oha river at the gorge twelve miles east of yuma tuma and create a reservoir thirty miles mile in length and eight miles in width the dam which will be of solid olid masonry is to be feet in length and feet high it will extend from the mountains on one slue lue of the gila to the opposite bank on ft roof QI di bed rook rock where three small islands rise out of the bed of the stream these islands will form abutments to so the he dam which will be built with such a slope as will carry the water away from the dam without cutting or wearing away the rock at its base the flume or canal which will conduct the water away from this thia reservoir to the lands to be irrigated will not be b over a mile in length from the end of the flume to the south and west canals will be constructed ted over the mesa and valley lands janus in different directions when the lands which all belong to the united states govern government mont are settled the reservoir it Is ia estimated will hold water enough to irrigate the acres ot of lano janu lying to the east and south t il I 1 yuma which extend into the mexican stat of donors hi onora and will also furnish water for acres of the Sonora land company lying be tween the dam and the colorado river in the valley of the gila it is 18 estimated that the dam alone will cost and that it will take two years yeara to complete it an abundance of good rock to Is at hand in the mountains adjoining the dam site eito the project t was originated by george W norton orton rT an engineer deer of high standing who was formerly with the southern pacific company the surveys are belne made by Q G W Rich richards ardol a well known engineer formerly with ahe same company |
