instructions are given with special reference to the duties aud and powers of the priesthood THE DOMESTIC organization during the past year some changes were made looking to a more complete organic organization tion of the students in a domestic capacity the city was divided into districts over which an elder and two counselors students were placed to preside and the teachers of each district were called to act as visitors over every boarding house as heretofore seniors preside at the meetings of the domes tic organization the presiding elders report their district a id tho seniors when called on report inear houses the teachers report at the regular teachers meetings in this way the organization tiou is similar to that oi 01 the church very satisfactory reau its nave have been accomplished and useful lessons are given the students in self govern ment students in these branches under the tuition of professors cluff and bramball Brim ball and instructor andelin have made excellent progress we have aimed here 1 to im part professional information 2 to inspire in the students a love lore tor for the literature of the profession and 8 to teach the best beet methods of acquiring and imparting knowledge the members of ithe the class in theory of teaching have written essays on educational subjects subject to which I 1 take pleasure in calling your att eLtion lang languages bages professors whitely and in their courses have lone done excellent work rhetoric philology philo locy and the ancient classics have been espe emphasized A two years course in greek is grammar classes it contains a collection of extracts from prize compositions sent out to the worlds fair and does credit both to the classes and the academy Prof Nels n in addition to his bm class clan duties has baa acted as secretary ot of the faculty and registrar french has been taught by prof phillips and grammar by brother emil maeser and slater sister young science cep through the liberal ampro for apparatus made by you early in the year the classes in physical and chemical sciences have progressed even beyond our expectations the additional appropriation already made lor for next year will sufficiently equip our laboratory for all elementary work dr phillips has done excellent work in ILA all branches of the sciences taught by him and it la Is with feelings of regret that I 1 announce his hie resignation he accepts a position in the churell university iu in salt lake city ane natural sciences under professor wolfe enjoy an importance now BOW in our class exercises they have never had bad belore before zoology and botany have been made full semester aud and a course in biology has ham been added professor wolfe has also taught general history and has labored as an critic teacher in the training school musio music the students in music nave have been under the direction of professor giles for vocal music assisted by ottille ottilie maeser in instrumental music miss mine beck miss lilly roberts and dr huff as special instructors have taught in this department though the growth of this department has been rapid as Is atte attested steu by the excellent concerts given by the choral society in the tabernacle SOle at provo and at salt lake city yet the instructors are not satisfied and ar rane ments are being made looking to a more complete organization and more efficient work the academy band needs special mention both because it is in a new feature and because of the high point of excellence reached by the players As soon as we feel able financially I 1 would recommend that we purchase a full set of silver and brass instruments mathematics the students in mathematics have been in charge of prof cluff assisted by instructor me kendrick we are greatly in need of instruments for the teaching of surveying also models for the practical illustration ol of conic sections 1 am pleased to record the successful introduction of in the academy several at tempts have been made heretofore but with little success owing to lack of room for workbenches workbenches work benches benches we have however during the last semester successfully carried on an elementary course in woodwork wood work under the tuition of instructor emil maeser provisions are already made lo jo increase the capacity of the department by the addition of several more workbenches work benches and the engagement of another instructor tor physical culture and gymnastics under the efficient labors of miss babcock the classes in physical culture have made rapid progress and it I 1 is noticeable that those students who exercise regularly as a rule do better belter work in their other bt udies physical culture is no longer an experiment its use as a school exercise is established i 1 would recommend that as soon as possible a room be fitted up as a gymnasium and that appi apparatus ratus be purchased for more professional work in this line connected with this gymnasium should be a bath or set of baths sufficient to accommodate all the pupils A small fee could be charged tor for their use and thus materially decrease the running expense M 1 I A normal under the tuition of dr hardy assisted by other teachers this course has done much to aid young men in carrying on the meetings of their associations land and in making those meetings highly educational the students stu Jents have h ave as a rule been earnest and energetic in their work and have made excellent progress program for the short abort time the course continues training school in charge of prof brimhall Brim ball and all the regular teachers of the preparatory school as critic teachers aims to give to the he normal practical a in the principles and methods of teaching already the wisdom of this school is seen in the excellent work done by our graduates and I 1 recommend mend that its efficiency be increased by the pur chase of at needed apparatus and the ex tension of the time required for training purposes the preparatory school which is the training school during the hours of the latter batters lat Is session is conducted as follows fol lowa the first and second grades by miss amy brown the third and fourth grades by miss irene the bath and sixth grades by miss mise mary Woodruff the seventh grade by orestus bean and the eighth grade by miss bands arts the art department has been in charge of prof hafen and slater sister christina young during the second semester meeter se we were deprived of brother hafen a services through a call made upon him to work in the temple at salt lake city H he will continue his labors however at the opening of next year sister young has ban devoted most 0 of her time to ladles ladle work sewing etc classes in cutting and fitting have atoo aim been organized I 1 believe that with ft a little encouragement by the proper arrangement of rooms the art courses course especially drawing and painting can be made as popular as their importance demands societies and associations the Poly society in charge of pro teasers brimhall and eggertsen has offered the students profitable ton lion as well as giving opportunities for acquiring general information and practice in public speaking several noted men among whom was prank frank 0 carpenter have lectured in this society the gium a society uon con
