account ot of t ti e production of their mines others ht bad considerable trouble in obtaining while in a few cases cabes he be had been able to get any statement whatever he then proceeds to scorch the coal mine operators in the in my examination of mines of the territory I 1 find that with one or two exceptions we mines have been work eu ei inn in a very primitive and incompetent manner in appointing a it appears to in SOMO some CROP as if he has been chosen not beci because use of his knowledge of coal mining but because he was an influential friend of the most moat prominent shareholders or he may have had bad a large amount of the shares himself those these men as a rule generally open out rooms as soon ars a the coal is reached in one cue the map has a great resemblance to a fan and rooms are driven into one another thereby leaving an insufficiency of pillars to sup pit the roof the fhe pillars in these cases are generally in such a condition that they are irrecoverable and thus thousands of tons of coal are lost to the owners such lisuch a mik miserable erable apology for min inse presents almost insurmountable difficulties in circulating a current of resh air sufficient for the needs of the mint r at the working face the fact of the matter is that these wines mines ire are worked on so BO system and the natural advantages presented in the joints 0 coal and roof are entirely disregarded and the coal worked ou on a carue or 1 all youl I in method ethod with little oi or no attention devoted tro to the greatest production of lump coal and the least amount of screenings not even in the opening of a coal mine has there tjien the slightest attention paid to the most elementary study of the geological structure of the coal field and the result to ie tha thattie tithe be mine Is ie practically worked r ut when it should only have reached its maximum capacity thus causing great loss lose to all parties concerned 1 I am pleased to state
