REDUCED the street sprinkling question then came up in the report of recorder jack and and assessor clute on the protest against sprinkling rin kling on the basis pro p ra posed my they reported that the amo amount u rit of frontage in the district was feet and the total frontage represented by the protestants was feet or less lees than one fifth of the total amount they therefore recommended that the necessary orders to complete the carry in ing out of the intention be made ar mr pendleton 1 I move that we reconsider the sprinkling question I 1 do not wish to obstruct any needed improvement pro or proper enterprise but I 1 cannot and will not vote for the adoption of any such harsh and unjust measure the poor should not be made to bear the burdens of the rich I 1 voted in favor of the matter once but I 1 have changed my mind mr james I 1 understand that signatures are now being obtained to raise money to defeat the proposition by carrying it into the courts city attorney hall when asked as to the legality of the proposition replied I 1 am unable to give a definite opinion on the subject without further consideration I 1 would suggest that the matter lay jay over for one week mr cohn I 1 am opposed to a reconsideration of the matter and thus defeat what we have already done I 1 move that the tax be reduced from ten to eight cents per front foot mr hall I 1 seconded the motion to reconsider for the reason that more than property owners presented a petition to this council asking that the tax be not levied they are certainly entitled to a little consideration at our hands it is unjust to tax the outlying streets at the same proportion as those which are centrally located I 1 am in favor of a compromise by the creation of two districts fri increase cresse the rate on the streets centrally located to fifteen cents per foot and reduce it on the outlying streets to five cents per toot eight bight cents will defray the expense of sprinkling for seven months then why by assess the sum of ton ten cents per front foot it will be criminal on the part of this council to knowingly levy a tax tox twenty five per cent in advance of what is needed mr james I 1 move that the matter be referred back to the committee with instructions to report at the next regular meeting of the council I 1 do not believe in my rich neighbors enjoying luxuries at my expense mr lynn jlynn the actual cost of sprinkling is seven cents and eight mills per front foot I 1 move the rate of tax be reduced from ten to seven cents per front foot the eight mills to be taken out of the general fund of the cit city this ais motion carried karrick pembroke and anderson voting against it TO THE CITY mr hall A short time ago the city engineer g eer was ordered to resurvey the city that gentleman has been too busy to attend to the matter I 1 move that he be allowed to engage such additional dit ional assistance as to is necessary to perform form the work without further defay by
