dooley and there the party was joined by gation consisting of judge minor miner mayor turner and ladies and gentlemen citizens or of ogden to the number of forty in a separate sleeper the journey t the pocatello representatives having made their way into the car an address of welcome was delivered by one of them attorney savidge who thanked the president for his influence in favor of opening up for homes of american families thanking the assembly for their welcome greeting the president bade them good bye and introduced mr wanamaker who however declined making a speech as did also secretary make the speech of welcome to the president addressed him as follows SPEECH OF WELCOME mr president with deep interest and exultant hearts we have followed you in your most moat happy journey leaving the historic banks of the potomac traversing the continent westward to the golden gate thence northward to I 1 where rolls the oregon and still northerly to that great inland sea where dwell the cities of the sound and now on OB your return eastward when you have accomplished the trip you will have made a journey aljourney greater in distance and more diversified in soil boll products scenery and resources than ever before undertaken by czar emperor or king within his own domin ions while you have found many states and territories you have found but one country bound together by one common heritage and history a people united in patriotic devotion and rendering to you as president of the united states their unqualified fealty and respect we congratulate you that the wise diplomacy of your administration presents to us a nation at peace with all the world canada and italy included we congratulate you that you find our great and common country advancing in population making large development in natural resources and increasing in material prosperity and wealth and now sir air we come inviting you to visit the territory of utah which we as a committee represent you will find as fair a territory as is within the boundaries of our country with an area of square miles a population of over agricultural products that support our own people and afford a surplus for export a stock raising interest that honors the drafts of our eastern neighbors ana mineral treasures that now producing largely are almost unbounded in their possibilities a territory that presents all the elements that constitute a great commonwealth a state in area and population an empire in resources we won would fain invite you to visit all of our fair cities but we are advised that your time is so limited as to admit of but one and we therefore invite you to visit our political commercial and financial centre tho the pride of our territory salt lake city may you enter the gates with rejoicing view the streets of zion and all its attractions with pleasure rest beside the banks of the river jordan with refreshment and as the portals of the city of the Sa saints intAll close upon your departure you may be assured that you carry with you the hearty good wishes of all the citizens of the territory and their prayer for your safe return to your official duties the president REPLIED BRIEFLY that the journey thus far had been most pleasant and its beauties indescribable he would take pleasure in accepting the invitation to visit utah and in comparing its present condition with that of 1881 as he remembered it he subsequently walked to the rear platform of the oar car and shook hands with the venerable white haired indian chief whom mr wanamaker for some minutes previously had teen been conversing with as he was surrounded by his people several hundred in number at some distance from the train the president requested the old chief to say to his people that he was PIVAL pleased sed to see so many of them and that they presented such a peaceable and respectable appearance the interview having ended and more than the time allowed by the schedule for staying in pocatello having elapsed the utah delegation boarded the pilot train and started on the return journey which was accomplished without incident worthy of note the U P depot in this city being reached by the salt lake city party at this morning THE decorations IN THE CITY at an early hour friday may ath large forces of artistic workmen began to decorate public buildings business blocks and private residences throughout this city in honor of the anticipated visit of the chief executive of the nation by noon carloads of bunting had bad been utilized in the adornment of the most prominent structures and the town presented a beautiful appearance by sunset the main thoroughfares were a bewildering maw mass of color cotor the artistic arrangement of the red white and blue streamers flags banners mottoes words of welcome and other devices made an imposing sight eight the decorations on east temple street commenced at the temple that magnificent edifice was crowned with national flags and profusely draped with bunting while on the south wall was the motto in large letters fear god and honor the president Pre aident the office of the NEWS was liberally draped and a large str earner bore the following inscription deseret news pioneer paper established 1860 1850 welcome to the president truth and liberty on the fronton front of the juvenile instructor building were the mottoes welcome to the grandson of tippecanoe and c under harrison freedom dawned on utah ff 11 on the Z C M fact factory iury above a large crayon picture of president harrison was the following appropriate prop inscription the wealth of nations home manufacture the beehive and lan li jn bouses were almost hidden from view under the profuse and elaborate dee decorations orations in the national colors the office and federal court buildings al presented a gals gala day aspect in addition to those mentioned there were hundreds of other structures that cannot be enumerated time and space pace preventing they all manifested a disposition on the part of their inmates and owners to do honor to the occasion in the direction of causing the city of salt ewt lake to assume a holiday appearance ARRIVAL OP OF THE PRESIDENT the president and party arrived in salt lake city wit at 4 saturday may 9 the sp cial train was composed of four pullman sleeping and drawing room oars cars and a dining car it was witched switched on a side track and arrangements made not to disturb the distinguished occupants until a little later in ba the morning about 6 people walf le began to assemble at the depot half an hour hodr later a platoon of police Af arrived rived then came the members of the reception pt on committee the marshal and bis bin aids and a post of the 0 A B R governor thomas and geo M scott the mayor boarded the car which the president occupied A few minutes later governor lo vernor thomas and mrs harrison appeared on the platform of the coach accompanied by mayor scott and president harrison the party then moved toward the carriages in waiting the governor and mrs harrison led the way followed by mayor scott and the president then came marshal ramsdall of the district of columbia who conducts the presidential party russell bussell B harrison and wife secretary rusk and mrs dimmick mr wanamaker and mrs mcke C W boyd and wife and mr forsburg Hors burg they proceeded afew a few yards to whore where the reception committee consisting of the hon HOD john T cainen Cai E dooley henry W lawrence B R C chambers and a number of others were in waiting Mayor may or scott presented the president and party to the committee and then the cheering and shouts of welcome commenced A procession was formed grand marshal page and twenty two aids aide at its head then followed the first brigade band U S N G 36 35 pieces next came the veterans of the southern army of the rebellion about fifty strong followed by the 0 A R numbering one hundred the first carriage contained governor thomas mayor scott president harrison and wife the second was occupied by marshal ramsdall ramada john the postmaster gen era eral and mrs dimmick the third was occupied by russell B harrison and wife jeremiah rusk busk the secretary of agriculture and wife then followed several carriages containing the members of the reception committee and the remainder of the presidential party the rhe procession moved along west brigham to second west thence to second south and east to main street thence to the walker house along the line of route immense crowds crowd of people assembled several hearty cheers were given the party was greeted along the whole line by the people with marked respect gentlemen waving their hats and ladies their handkerchiefs in honor of the distinguished visitors
