Show A CITIZEN IN SACKCLOTH ft t strikes me that the liberal administration in salt lake city is running things in rather a highhanded manner utterly reckless in regard to expenditures and not very careful 0 of keeping within the bounds of the law just think of the weekly additions that are being made to the list of paid officers of the city A lord high scavenger was appo a few weeks smet with a salary of per month to orect citizens where they ought to haul their wandre and dead animals to and nu now w that dignitary asks for the appointment of an assistant at a salary of 75 per wout hand his petition will doubtless be granted A board of public works a corps of mounted police and numerous salaried assistants to the already existing exist ipg offic officers erB all help to ewel the list which is now dow perhaps fully treble the number what it was under the old regime then too the taxes are piling to an extent that 0 s really appalling to a poor man the sewer tax additional special water tax sidewalk tax and sprinkling tax lax with w ith the prospective paving or macadamizing macada mizing tax now looming up id in addition to the taxes which people have been wont to pay in the pa past at are almo fet if not quite enough to compel every poor man idith a small income who happens to own a home anywhere near the center of town to sell out and remove to the country if f I 1 am correctly informed there is no warrant in law for the sprinkling tax which to is now being assessed and which amounts in some cases to as much as the whole of the city tax heretofore I 1 was this morning the recipient of a missive from E B R clute notifying me that unless I 1 paid 2800 2300 levied against me for street sprinkling before june the same would be collected with costs I 1 happen to own a corner lot with a total frontage on two streets of f 17 rods if the ordinance allowed him to assels me eight cents per foot for frontage on both streets which it does not my total tax for sprinkling would only amount to 2244 but I 1 fall fail to see the justice of my being taxed at all for the street sprinkling inas inasmuch uch as my home has had bad no benefit from the sprinkling unless it was upon one occasion some weeks since when some of the firemen squirted water from a hydrant situated in that vicinity upon the street and tried to collect 60 50 cents from each householder I 1 am not opposed to public improvements prove ments nor to paying my just share for the same but I 1 do protest against being taxed unlawfully and without receiving any benefit as I 1 consider is now being attempted A CITIZEN SALT LAKE CITY may |
