the congregation ite he said he left utah ibur years and two months ago to all a mission in germany it was with a heavy heart that he left lef thome home but he be trusted in the lord and had been bean blessed he felt glad that ile he had been considered worthy to io fill a mission it is characteristic of the latter day saints that they love their brethren and sisters of the human family so when an elder is called on a mission he willingly makes whatever sacrifice is necessary to go and proclaim the principles of salvation to the world the elders go abroad suffering scorn and persecution and hardship that they might make known to the human family the plan of salvation n there are many trials connected with the thap performance er for mance of this work for the elders have to libor labor mostly mosey among the poor as the rich will seldom listen to the preaching of the truth As a result of the promulgation of the gospel the lord has gathered many of his people together he is still gathering them to a bountiful and beautiful land the speaker had traveled in an all of the countr countries li of europe but bui lit ib none of them had he beheld such subh a lovely place as that which the lord had vaught brought the saints to for a home and which has been developed under the blessings of heaven by their industry they have performed a marvelous work and the eyes of the world are today attracted to the home of the letter latter day saints but the thrift and energy of the people do not remove the intense prejudice that exists against the cormons mormons Mor mons the world seems to think that the name amo mormon is a great disgrace but the saints think differently for the word Morn mormon JOn medna means bhore abod I 1 the speaker described the manner of living among the people in n that portion of germany where he hid had been trav traveling as to their food clothing etc lie he also related his experience in being unable to obtain places in which to preach the most bitter opponents of the elders were professed of bf christianity who told the most absurd falsehoods which were believe dby many people ae they would tell ho how the saints were driven with whips like slaves and also that the women were hitched to plows etc like oxen one statement of class ea came morvel very nearly causing the banishment of the elders from switzerland This was ah assertion that the were ere in a desert country and abre bre starl starting ng to tb death the government of course wanted to preserve their people from beag taken to such a place the were ho however weer at last convinced that the statement a about starving ete etc was tru untrue trub switzerland is it self if a 11 very poor country to live in ole he sol soil not being half so productive as that of utah toe wt that it is 18 much more closely cultivated CUR bated wages etc are am very low and the mass of the people are am poof indeed the saints there though they are from the poor classes are kind and hospitable to the missionaries they also allo ob der erve the principle of bf tithing and the lord pours out his blessings apon them P elder ader monch testified to the truth of the dospel as there was no response how then could they expect the children to attend the sunday schools As with the priest so with the people brother goddard dard he was pleased to say was always here and there were doubtless good reasons in other cases why brethren were absent but he felt that many who might attend these meetings did not and nothing better could be expected of the children with such examples before them he reiterated his former instructions against the holding of funerals at the meeting houses at ho hours set for meetings and sabbath schools where the sacrament was administered htwa it was athe the right of the bishopric to administer tile the sacrament or those authorized by the bishopric and along with this or df fiance ahen administered V lir the sunday schools this school was waa filled with some of the best and choicest spirits among the people of god who were progressing admirably with noble objects in view he felt that the school had the support and aud sympathy of all god fearing latter laer day saints religious teaching was waa made as much of a feature at the tee academy as any branch of secular knowledge the works of the church were used as textbooks text books and special meetings were hold held once a week where the young men and women bore their testimony asked questions and received instructions on spiritual matters he asked the faith and prayers of the priesthood to sustain the cause in which halwas laboring and hoped it would be recognized as one of the institutions of zion i BISHOP GEORGE stated that he believed the incarceration of so many of our bie brethren in the penitentiary thus leaving their families without their cm care protection and counsel was one great calise cause of the falling ot off in ift the attendance at sunday schools schoola and warmly seconded the suggestion of elder goddard in relation to nieces i i sary missionary work to jo be done in their behalf the mothers it was true tive could do much but in the t absei absence iee of thele their husbands and the fathers of their children they needed encouragement and assistance their children under such circumstances became as it were the wards of the whole people BISHOP JAMES WATSON of the nineteenth ward in relation to the sacrament in sunday schools said mid he had noted that a great amount of time w was as expended expend ed and where small children predominated much disorder reigned during the administration of the sacrament his suggestion was that the older ones who could attend the tabernacle partake not of the sacrament in the sunday schools sebo olo thus abbreviating the time used there for this purpose PRESIDENT A M CANNON again spoke he said mid among other things that he vas pleased to see that brother joseph H pelt felt representing P the mutual improvement associations of the stake was present pre his strictures of the fore part of the meeting therefore would not apply appl y to him he commended the efficient and faithful labors of brother george goddard in the sunday school cause and hoped the priesthood generally would support that institution which wa WM worthy of all encouragement and sympathy changing the topic he said mid that it had come to his knowledge that there were peddlers in the dommu anky vending among the wives and mothers of this people means for the attainment of a purpose which shwas was abominable in the sight of heaven he denounced such people and those who patronized them in strong terms term and warned them that they would suffer the wrath of an offended god if they permitted or encouraged such vile and infernal practices gods first command was to multiply and replenish the earth 11 other matters were coached torched upon and the business budness of f
