Tomer said these programs give SUU students, faculty, staff and the community opportunities to come together and volunteer. Many people came together to aid the Center in one of their programs, Elementary Green Teams, by providing educational outreach, interpretive material and a recycling program in schools surrounding SUU. Tomer said people affiliated with the Center for Sustainability, organizations like the Southern Utah Recycling Coalition, Paul Roelandt and Emily Barajas with the National Park Service, people from the recycling plant in Cedar City and recycling assistants at SUU all contributed to the success. For years, Cedar City didnt think it was possible to recycle, a YW&jiUc,V li 'it Decide Continued from Page 111 their best, Continued from Page 1 I know us librarians can be intimidating, Roche said. Its hard for some students to admit they cant find something. Part of the event is meant to break down barriers, and I think we are. He said he has enjoyed and is students meeting impressed with their answers to some of the trivia questions. Emily Little, ajumor English major from Tooele who works at the library, said students had to answer some difficult questions. The hardest question Ive heard is, How many books are in the library? she said. We as the student workers dont even know the answer. She said the participants have been learning a lot from the experience. she said hadnt Little personally seen anyone pick up a participant sheet, but knew a handful of students had entered the competition. He said he wrote a letter to students and faculty explaining the situation and then posted the letter with a petition signing sheet on SUUSA boards around campus. Hatch said he is using social media to spread the word about the petition. He also set up a table to give information about the petition at the Earth Day celebration Friday. Hatch said 75 people have signed the petition. The next step will be to take the petition forms and show them to the president to indicate that the Center is supported by many people, he said. Tomer said the Center has affected many people with their programs. They have created have a functioning program for our Iron County let alone schools, and now, here we are in North, Iron Springs, Fiddlers and GPA Charter Schools, Tomer said. Tomer said the Elementary Schools Green Team material and the recycling on campus will cease if the Center does not have the funding to employ individuals to pick up recycling. She said this is a sad thought because an average of 3,000 lbs. is recycled a week on the SUU campus alone. She said this money offsets landfill fees and generates revenue for SURC. As of now, Tomer said she and three recycling assistants will lose their jobs, leaving no one to take care of the recycling. Before the Center existed volunteers picked up recycling but were inconsistent. For more information about why the funding for the Center has been cut, go online at suunews.com.
