We are all making sacrifices in some form or another to help the university stay afloat. The Center for Sustainability is the branch of SUU that focuses on making us green. They coordinate recycling and the water bottle refill stations, spread awareness of environmental issues and initiatives and encourage the SUU community to help take care of Earth. Cedar City is in an incredible area of the world that people travel overseas to come visit. We have national parks, numberless outdoor recreation opportunities and open space, something that is becoming less common as years go by. With this location comes a responsibility to take care of the land around us, and being green is one of the best ways to honor that stewardship. We need the Center for Sustainability. Just because the university has decided to sacrifice the Center does not mean the community needs to. If enough people donate what they can be it money, time or spreading awareness of the Center we can help the Center to stay. SUU has been given multiple awards for our efforts to be environmentally friendly, and a university can either be a leech on the environment or it can be one of its greatest helpers. An education seems to take up a lot of paper (essays, handouts, signs, etc.). According to the Center's website, the SUU community recycled about 50,000 pounds of paper in 2011. Their website also says that from January to March 2012, 15.85 tons of mixed material at SUU was recycled instead of ending up at a landfill. We can recycle paper, cardboard, inkjet printer cartridges, laser printer cartridges, cellphones, iPods, plastic and aluminum, all of which are used frequently at our university in the name of education. Recycling is a way to take care of the environment and not harm it through human progress. To contact the Center, send an email .to suustainabilitysuu.edu. We encourage you to do what you can to help keep SUU as green as can be. v tcum "X Isjgg? X I . Earlier this month, the Budget Task Force made the decision to cut funding for the Center for Sustainability. This is a sacrifice we, as students of SUU, do not want to make, and so we ask the community to put their heads and bank accounts together and come up with the funds to save the Center. become) i Amx ca -- Show r . 1 Kpmg J(; iTL X ft'h XXU.X: ZAK MITCHELL UNIVERSITY JOURNAL Autism awareness is first step One in 88.
