1 the direction of the spirit ot of truth I 1 and wished the faith and prayers of the saints to that end he knew the prayers prayer of the congregations of the saints availed in I 1 ibis his regard as well as in others and that god would speak to their edification it they exercised faith the gospel was not a were mere form but was filled with life and vital etya ity a gospel ol of works faith obedience sacrifice and purification this was arasa a dispensation which am braced the falness of all dispensations when the gospel was sent in this dispensation daso e it proclaimed peace on en earth and good will to all men and those who received the gospel in its falness bad had their hearts fil filled ledwith with love for the whole human family the saints had this spirit to a great extent 3 it was the spirit that buoyed up the elders when enthey wh went into the world as strangers tha an and proclaimed ro claimed the principles of life and so salvation V to mankind putting their trust in god seeking only to do good among all men and to conform to the will of their lord without tais spirit of love the elders could not bear up as they do under trials the same spirit should actuate the saints in all that they do or they can not set an example worthy to bedol be followed by mankind it if the saints could go no farther in doing good than the world they had not profited by vie the gospel but it they they ey had something within them that placed them or on a higher plane and nearer to exaltation the lord had bad given to them more light than those not of his bis church and expected greater faithfulness ul in consequence men point to td weaknesses of those professing to be saints and try to show that the principles they espouse are wrong but bat the fact that the faults found are violations of principle only go to show that the principle is correct rec tand and that the ault is aub who do not live up to their aiom professions es the speaker exhorted the saints to be faithful to toe the principles of the gospel in all things ELDER ARTHUR STAYNER was the next speaker he said it was truly said that if the gospel had bad not placed the love of the human family in our hearts and given us the power of self sacrifice and to humble ourselves and put away pride and self will what t more has tt it done than the various religions extant in the world there will be no people under greater condemnation dem nation than the saints it if they do not profit by the teachings tea chines of the almighty they bad raised a banner of salvation n and proclaimed that they were in communication with god by revelation they claimed to have received the gospel in its purity for the exaltation of those who received and obeyed it the saints should weigh themselves by the stand ard of purity and love which god we gave they should ask themselves whether they had availed themselves of the teachings of the gospel gospe 1 and were exemplars ot of the principle they professed they were commanded to love those who hated bated them to pray for those who despitefully used them aud and to return good tor for evil do the saints follow out these injunctions it they do not they should look to themselves and repent of evil king benjamin in speaking to his people as recorded in the book of mormon says for the natural man is an enemy to god and has been from the fall of adam and U nil ube be for ever and ever but if he yields to the ent icings of the hof holy and arit W teth off the nat natural ural man and become be cometh tb a saint through the atonement of lord and be cometh as a child neek e e humble patient full of love lot e williw thew to submit mit to all things which the lora de ees s fit to inflict upon him even as a child doth to his father this is the gospel of jeses christ willingness to submit to the will of god and acknowledge his hand band in all things willingness to act in any capacity conformable to the will of providence no people could claim to be nimble humble before god unless they would work in 11 any position position they were called aj by hin him 1 to fill I 1 the spirit of a roan man who is willing to perform whatever labor tans tails to his lot though i was in an obscure position wao that df humility AS with individuals 0 so o wath communities those who pass life SmOot smoothly Wy and with lim limited ted vs ex peri merleace per leace ence lack much of leasing learning te le lessons taught by more painstaking circumstances the saints had nor noi b been een reared in the lap of ease but had learned lessons of toil and suffer ing ng having received this instruction they hey were preparing to become a great people in the hands bands of god because they hey bad suffered persecution was no argument that it was sent as a punishment or that they were hated of god it rather indicated that their experience peri ence wi was as because god loved them and desired to qualify them for the great future the result of patient suffering would be an ability to exercise the power of god to an aa extent that no other people possessed the same power that jesus himself exercise was conferred in the priesthood the saints were but in the infancy 4 ney of their power they were but 1 learning e 4 rn in g its alphabet not many years hence be ne a and the righteousness of zion sh bui d go forth as brightness and the sa salvation I 1 thereof as a lamp that burneth this may not be realized now but soon will be when the saints learn the secret of humility a and nd are willing to submit to the lord in all things the great power of the heavens will rest upon them and be exercised upon the principles of righteousness the delight of the saints JA ia to have the spirit spiris of jesus christ and the glory they seek is his glory such a claim would be arrogance in those who did not live for it it people give way to evil desires they cabaot receive the great blessings promised to the faithful f al the powers of heaven cannot be controlled only on principles of righteousness it is idle for the shinto saints to think to control those powers in any other way the feeling of love is produced as the trait of a righteous life of voluntary obedience 0 tile the laws of god those who would live righteous lives must obtain the light of the holy ghost the saints have the right to that spirit have they cultivated it so that it diels with them have they lived coasto so as to receive of its presence and instructions these are questions of vital importance to every one beak being mixed up in the affairs of the world worl it is sometimes difficult for the saints to look beyond but if they expect to excel in glory they must excel unrighteousness righteousness in unless they abide the laws of god they cannot receive the reward while they pay their chief attention ty temporal things they are closing their heires hearts to their spiritual welfare the spiritual should receive the greatest consideration for it is spiritual excellence that will be the crown of adornment forthe for the faithful it is obtained by sacr sacrifice itice by putting utting away pride and covetousness it t cannot be obtained through obe diance to mammon he whom the people obeyed would giver give the reward it i they loved evil evil would came it if righteousness righteousness would fallow the gifts of the spirit would not come unless they were lived for therold The Holy Roly spirit does not dwell with contention or avarice or pride or er anything from an evil source with impurity of heart we cannot see the kingdom of god or come into possession of its powers evil men did not desire the light of the spirit are the saints actuated by the holy ghost it if not it is because of their own neglect or wrong doing if they are it is because they have done the will of the father the great work of salvation salvat loin can only be accomplished by the power of god it is alone his mighty arm that can cause his work to triumph the saints should draw nearer to the almighty and multiply power with him or re he will chasten them those thase who are faithful will en the exercise of that power that is promised to the people of god it their way was smooth they would not learn the glorious lessons that the heavens design to teach toem them the difficulties they meet are but steps to the ladder to heights celestial he who is anxious to reach the presence of god rejoices at the opportunity and strength to overcome difficulties let the saints learn this lesson that the greatest being is lie be through whom god is most easily seen he who lives in such purity that god delights to speak through him he who rejoices most in the power of god the great prophets did not dwell in palaces or enjoy the pleasures of the world but sacrificed all for the communion of the heavens the saints have the power and opportunity of these blessings and if they are wise they will press forward in the path of eternal life the speaker exhorted the people to seek the almighty by their works ol of faithfulness love and humility in all circumstances and conditions that toey might enjoy the light of the holy ghast they have a great responsibility to bear in the salvation of mankind the world at large cannot comprehend these blessings but the faith I 1 ful fulcan can cau he prayed that the lord would bless the honest in
