Marching, pep bands on tap BY AAF.ON GOODMAN Those who wonder whatever happened to the SUSC marching band will be happy to know that it will soon be making a comeback. Slowly but surely the new marching band will grow as SUSC grows, says its new director, Paul Garrison, bringing with it new traditions and a different look. Garrisons objectives are simple, he says. It is his intention to provide students with an educational opportunity because those who will SUs revamped marching band will grow as the university grows, says its director, Paul Garrison. be continuing on as music educators need to know how to run a marching band. Another objective is to generate excitement and help build school spirit at various sports events and school functions. It might take a while to reach our full potential, says Garrison, but as the students interest in the music program grows, well be able to do more and more things. It just depends highly on the students. Uniforms for this year may only consist of blue jeans, sneakers and a sweat shirt, however the brand new look for the university band is now on the drawing board. The uniforms will most likely be red with the new SUU logo on r the left breast with a changeable cape on the back. The hats will be of the military cadet variety with plume. With the new look, we just want to start at square one with new traditions and a new style. says Garrison. The marching band will be taking on more of a showier approach combining military marching with intricate patterns on the football field. With this new look and approach to things, Garrison wants to have a band the university and community will be proud of, he said. The pep band is this years primary focus and will perform at all Thunderbird football home games. If there are enough students, Garrison wants to do a little bit of marching to help generate some interest and teach some basic marching fundamentals so there would be some who would be familiar with the marching style for next year. There will be students from all types of high schools and transfer students from other university bands that will have their own way of doing things, but we want to start at square one and start new traditions and establish that this is how the Southern Utah State University band will Qperate. Garrison emphasized that the future of the university band greatly depends on the students interest. Those who are interested in being a part of the group are encouraged to class which meets at sign up for the 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, except Thursdays. It is a great opportunity to grow as a musician, meet new friends and get involved in the school, says Garrison. Auditions are not required and those who have any questions big or small are encouraged to contact Garrison in the Music Building. two-cred- it Auditions are slated for pair of fall plays Auditions for SUSC Theatres fall productions of Annie and The Elephant Man have been set for Sept. 26, 27, and Oct. 1. The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance, has roles for six men ages 20 through 60, three women ages 20 through 40. Auditions will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Auditions should consist of a prepared short dramatic monologue one to two minutes in length. Callbacks will be conducted on Sept. 27 with cold readings from the script. Those wishing to audition must sign up for a time slot on the SUSC Theatre callboard in the SUSC and Auditorium. Production dates are Nov. 8-- 15-1- Auditions for adult roles in the musical Annie, by Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Chamin, will also take place on Wednesday, Sept. 26 beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the Auditorium Mainstage. There are a variety of roles, ages 20 through 60, for both men and women. Auditions should consist 2 of a short comic monologue and bars of an upbeat musical number. The combined song and monologue should not exceed two minutes in length. An accompanist will be provided. All those auditioning should be prepared for movement and dance auditions. Those wishing to audition must sign up for a time slot on the SUSC Theatre callboard in the SUSC Auditorium. Production dates are Dec. 8 Sc with three weekday matinees on December 6, 7, and 13. 16-3- 6-- 13-1- 5, Auditions for the roles of Annie and six other orphans (ages 7 12) will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 1 beginning at 5 the Auditorium Mainstage. Auditions should consist of on p.m. one verse of either Tomorrow or Maybe, both from the musical Annie. An accompanist will be provided. All young girls should also be prepared for movement auditions, as well as readings from the script. Casting for these roles will finish that evening, and all girls auditioning should be prepared to stay for at least two hours. Rehearsals will begin later that week, and will be held on most weekday evenings (or late afternoons), as well as on Saturdays. through |
