To help students choose and map out a major course of study, the ASSUSC Senate is sponsoring a Major Fair today from 3 to 7 p.m. on the lower quad. Last spring, the senate decided that instead of having faculty members tell new students about educational options, students within each major would present available courses of study. ASSUSC Academic Vice President Mark Holyoak said the plan was adopted because students relate better with other students. The counseling center will also have a booth for those in need of academic counseling. Holyoak said, Most freshmen come to college with no clue where to get started, the major fair will hopefully give them an idea. Booths will be set up to represent major fields of study: education; business, communication, and technology, science; and arts and letters. Each booth will have a list of graduation requirements for both majors and minors in all fields. The fair is designed to provide an outlook that most students right out of high school dont have, said Holyoak. It gives those who have decided on a major a chance to see exactly what they will have to do, and those who havent decided can look around and find something that interests them, he added. Holyoak said if the fair is a success the senate will work to make it an annual event. Stuart plans ride hotline ESSBlf V (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Summing up the situation, Sherratt said, Here we are poised and ready to go but its looking more and more like theres no place to go. The college wont be able to survive without additional housing. Several projects initiated by ASSUSC were also discussed during the session. ASSUSC President Julie Stuart said student leaders, in an effort to reduce drunk driving accidents, are creating a telephone hotline for students needing rides home from weekend parties. A second project outlined by Stuart is a program to better orient class will be divided freshman students. Stuart said the into groups of 20. Each group will be under the direction of a student leader until Homecoming weekend. The leader will show the group how to register, attend various activities with them, and orient the group to campus. Stuart said ASSUSC would also work this year to raise funding for Library acquisitions and two ASSUSC endowment scholarships.
