Twice MVP, Thomas leads SUSC by Brooks Washburn Not many people have been named Most Valuable Player in the same tournament two years in a row. However, not many players have the desire, ability and polish of Southern Utah State senior guard Gwen Thomas. Thomas led the Lady Birds to a pair of impressive victories in the Color Country Holiday Classic a year ago, and was named the tourneys MVP. Last week, the Thomas turned the trick again, pacing her teammates to wins over Redlands and Northern Arizona to take the tournament crown. On top of that, she was again voted the Classics MVP. Thomas played high school basketball in Las Vegas, and later went on to star at the College of Eastern Utah in Price. Following a successful junior college career, Thomas came to Southern Utah State to pursue a degree in physical education, and, of course, to play basketball. In her first year as the Lady 'Birds playmaker and floor leader, Thomas was named She was second in the and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in scoring, and led the league in steals and assists. This year, Thomas has scored an average of 16.3 points a game (through eight games) and averages 4.3 assists per outing as well. Gwen is a real fine ball handler and she dribbles extremely well, says Boyd Adams, SUSC coach. In addition, shes a good passer, and she has good court sense. Adams says he is pleased with the way Thomas has taken charge of the team in a short time this year. Gwen is a real floor leader, and its quite an asset to our team, he says. Thomas has drawn praise from her teammates as well as her coach. Gwen holds our team together, says Kellee Hadfield, a freshman from Las Vegas. Shes the catalyst behind our success this year. Gwen Thomas, a senior guard from Las Vegas, Nev., scored in double figures in two games to lead the Lady 'Birds to the championship of the Color Country Classic last week.
