Forget that the Thunderbirds are Forget those crushing 15 and 20 point losses to Division I opponents. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball season is just getting underway. In the games that really count, the RMAC games, SUSCs record stands at And with a little luck, that record could be 1 following this weekends road trip to Colorado Mines 9 and Southern Colorado. For the uninformed who wonder why a school so steeped in quality basketball tradition has had such a dismal start, iMSMRHGIIR!." event the sale Coach Horns TVBirds will compete of the season Weve only got a few more and 81-8- 2 SUSC Yearbooks left! They wont last much longer at the low, low... incredibly low price of just $ 1 .00 each. Yes, thats right, just $1.00 for The Tavi a collectors item. A blast from the past. A bit of SUSC history, captured on paper. AND its caffeine free. 1980-8- 1 perhaps a look at preseason competition would provide a clue. Cal Poly Pomona, Weber State and Idaho State, the first three opponents of the year, are all Division I teams. An NAIA Division II school like SUSC cannot hope to compete against teams with the type of money, publicity and schools have. recruiting clout the A logical question at this point might be, Why do we play them if we cant hope to win? The answer is simple, yet complex at the same time. When Southern Utah plays a Weber State or an NAU, the program receives a healthy portion of the gate receipts. In a school where athletic money is scarce, thats important. ..yes, even important enough to travel a long distance to provide a big preseason win for some other team in their fieldhouse. Ah, but thats not the only reason. In playing against such tough competition, Southern Utah has honed its skills, and Bob Schermerhorn has the Thunderbirds ready to play going into this weekends crucial games in Colorado. Now that big Bob Evans, the seven footer who transferred from Texas A&lM, is eligible, the SUSC attack will feature a new wrinkle: a bonafide big man, someone who will clog up the middle defensively and grab his share of rebounds, someone who will post up and call for the ball with authority. The presence of Evans at the post will allow John Pierce to pursue his power game at the forward spot. The prospects for a more versatile attack are exciting. Dont let SUSCs preseason record fool you. The Thunderbirds will be tough. They will compete. And when the will be dog fight for NAIA play-of- f spots is over, the right there, in the middle of the battle. Grid, diamond coach wont return The contract of Southern Utah State baseball and assistant football coach Larry Wilson will not be renewed, according to Dr. Steve Lunt, athletic director. College administrative officials had refused to comment on previously unconfirmed reports regarding Wilsons status at SUSC. Coach Wilson is under a one-yecontract to work for the college, just like any other teacher or coach, Lunt said. All I can say is that a decision was made just before the end of last quarter, and his contract will not be renewed for the 1984-8- 5 academic year. Lunt said Wilson will continue performing his current duties for the balance of the 1983-8academic year. 4 Present This Coupon For One I Steak and Shrimp Special Buy One and Get One Free J Sullivans Get yours now at The Thunderbird House. 529 South 200 West kitty-cornand Oak halls. er from Juniper La Tajada Room j (Salad Bar and Lounge) 86 South Main 586-676- 1 I One coupon per table Expires January 3 1 , 1984 J |
