Boyd Redington, director of Photo Services at SUSC, was that boy. I still have my first camera at home, reminisced Redington. I had always wanted a camera. Although his beginnings may not have been elaborate, Redingtons 51 years have been full of success, fulfillment and excitement. His formal career in photography began in Cedar City as an trainee in a photo studio under the G.I. bill, shorl.y after returning r from a stint in Europe during the Korean War. After several years of working in the darkroom, Redington took a job as a Highway Patrol Dispatcher for three years. This job, although not directly related to photography, proved to be very exciting and established some contact that would later make frequent use of his photographic talents. Largely due to SUSCs Richard Thompson, then head of the museum and photo services, e Redington became the first photographer at SUSC. Since he never received any formal training, he learned his technique through practical experience. You get a feel for it, he said. After you get the mechanics of camera operation down, you just get a feel for the rest. Evidently he has the tight feel, judging from his published photos appearing in school and local publications, national magazines, a text on acting, a cover photo for Utah Holiday and covers for the Home section of The Salt Lake Tribune. In addition, his work has been featured on numerous postcards and calendars. A shot of Rainbow Arch at Lake Powell and a beautiful shot of Navajo Lake hang on the wall of his office; they testify of the level of competency and talent achieved by Redington. d Exercise CONTACT YOUR STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE 5C6-7- 7 dream becomes career Boyhood SUSCs Boyd Redington parlays early camera into way of life 19 two-yea- TIMCS Superior Auto Parts Auto Supplies A complete line of all Auto Parts & Accessories for Foreign & Domestic Cars & Trucks Up to 40 Discount for College Students with ID 200 West 200 North, Cedar City CALL: 5863896 after hours 586-891- 5 full-tim- Although his list of credits is long, the opportunity to work with people is more important to him than any of his photos. In fact, working with people has been the most rewarding and exciting part of his career at SUSC. Redingtons favorite assignments dealing with people are those involving sports. He has watched only a handful of SUSCs basketball and football games from the stands in his tenure at SUSC. Even the action of sports, though, cannot compare with Redingtons involvement in a double homicide case. Due to his work for some law enforcement agencies in the past, Redington was called one Saturday night to meet the Kane County Sheriff at Navajo Lake Estates to photograph a crime scene. Redington complied and met him the next morning. The investigation revealed that it was, in fact, a double homicide and the graves of a young hitchhiking couple were found. Redington remembered the process of taking pictures of the graves as they were unearthed, revealing the young bodies. He then had to take pictures of the actual crime scene in the cabin. Although his greying beard bespeaks his years of experience, it certainly downplays his inner sense of adventure and freedom. They say life begins at 40, he said, it did for me. Since turning 40 Redington has been involved in such adventurous activities as skydiving, hiking, motorcycle riding and water skiing. 1 think working with young people has helped keep me thinking young, even though my body doesnt always feel young, joked Redington whose fairly robust frame is proof of his physical activity and certainly looks younger than its 51 years. Even though the future for Redington is uncertain, it is a cinch that he will be involved with people and will be where the action is. Some of the possibilities include early retirement and a e new career as a photographer, or perhaps getting on with a river running crew to do promotional and public relations photography. free-lanc- |
