Show Hunt Slows Weather Pheasant Stormy The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, November 8, 1975 6 Outdoors by By Grant V. Messerly Tribune Sports Writer Saturday was opening day for Utahs pheasant hunting season, but the weather was better suited for duck hunting. And, as a matter of fact, for Don Brooks all the good many hunters did, they should have gone duck hunting! Idaho border Wet Weather The weather was the same from St. George to the Utah-- Miglity Anglers Prove Hunting Shouldn't Stop Fishing Just battin around these here hills: ; Lanny Lloyd of Salt Lake can testify that just because hunting seasons come along a man shouldnt put his fishing tackle away. While friends went hunting, Lanny went fishing and nailed a brown on the Weber. . I liked this story out of Wyoming. Rancher John Rlinkin of Worland matched a Game and Fish Commission reward of $300 in hopes of catching the guilty parties who slaughtered six antelope recently. The East Carbon Wildlife Federation will hold its annual scholarship banquet next Saturday at 8 p.m. at East Carbon High. But the East Carbon sportsmen have his beat wishes for a most , six-poun- Listed as Poor Conservation officers listed most of northern Utah as poor . or even very poor. Weber County was rated very poor with few birds killed, the . officers reported. The report was the same for the Tremon-toThatcher and Penrose areas of Box Elder County. Pressure was light in north Cache Valley where tie officers reported about one bird for every 100 hunters. South Cache Valley was an exception with heavy Dressure and hunters averaging about one-habird each. Southern Utah was slow In most areas, though the reports from he Fairview, Sanpete and Salina areas was fair to good with about normal pressure. The Beryl and Delta areas, reported fair success. Hunting pressure at Delta was light, but heavy at Beryl Fair to Poor Milford, Parowan and East Millard reports were fair to poor, with an average take of one-habird per hunter. Pressure in the Milford area was about half of normal. In Utah County, the Genola, Lake Shore, Pajson and West areas were best Mountain with fair to good reports. Springville, Spanish Fork and Neplii areas reported poor luck. The north end of Utah County had very heavy pressure with poor success. Utah The south central areas around Ferron, Orangeville and Castle Dale were slow with hunting pressure down. Huntington and Green River reported fair to good hunting. The largest part of Carbon County had lighter pressure than last year with slow hunting. Need Rain Gear n, Ram gear was a must, not because of the drizzle that continued throughout much of the day, but also because of water clinging to brush and other vegetation in the fields. Some hunters went so far as to wear waders for hiking through the wet cover. only d was the Uintah Basin where early, spotty reports indicated light pressure but fair to good success. It was. of course, raining but the hunters who were out did manage to get some birds. Northern Utah In the northern Utah areas, toured from Hyrum through Box Elder, Weber and Davis counties and found the hunting I pressure about the same as last year. Hunting success was extremelv spotty. . In the Hooper area of Davis County, for instance, Wesley Wilson, Roy, and Brent Simpson, Hooper, had their limits by 11 a.m. There were lots of birds, we would have had our limits much earlier if we out-foxe- Pesky Bear Raids Camp Seems Salmon guide Gerald Scholten had two ' Wisconsin hunters out in the Selway country. The bear raided their camp five nights in a row, ripped ham up the kitchen tent, made off with a and an apple pie." That did it. The hunters set up a warning system of cans and dish pans against a white canvas background, then stood sentry shifts. Sure enough, Brer Bruin fell into the trap and was met by the firepower of three rifles. Wyoming has approved fishing regulations for the 1971-7- 2 season. Only a few changes were made. However, the creel limit for cutthroat trout in all waters tributary to the Snake River above the Hoback will be six fish. Before, only the Snake proplimit also will limit. The er had a to Yellowstone the drainage. apply And Cottonwood Creek in Teton Park .will be open only from July 1 through Oct. 1 beginning next year to protect cutthroat spawning runs. j A survey of 50 state law enforcement agencies conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation rather explodes the theory that gun registration makes it easy to track down criminals. i Only six homicides and six robbery cases resulting in convictions were attributed to the tracing of firearms, and that was over a period of 10 years! Whats more, not a single case of aggravated assault was solved as the result of tracing a firearm by its serial number. The pheasants were in deep hiding and while there were pockets where plenty of roosters did show up, the overall picture was poor.
