James L. Christiansen, now a Granite School District elementary teacher, bases his criticism on the criteria used to evaluate the classroom performance of teachers on a study o? the Elementary School Student Teachers Attitudes Toward Education he completed recently for his masters said. Maintaining that the student teachers become victims of the structure and are power forced into old, outdated habits. Mr. Christiansen said, Unfortunately, most of them stay that way when they begin to teach and the archaic system is perpetuated. He explains that today's education students are taught an approach to teaching in which student discipline is and the teacher is primarily a resource person and an example of learning. d thesis. Senseless Conformity' l.nss&lihfsrfory PrrjlcP? me Mr. Christiansen said he began the study out of dissatisfaction with what he considers the practice of making the quietness of the classroom and conformity of teaching methods the top criteria of a good teacher. College students are trained to be much different teachers than they end up being and I wanted to know why.' he said. Students in the college of education are taught that the ideal way of handling education is to often let young people loo-- e to develop their full ts, he explained. However, Mr. Christiansens thesis study shows that in actual teaching situations, student teachers often revert to an authoritarian system w here the teacher is the absolute determiner of rules of behavior and what will be studied. Altitude Inventory creative talen Mr. Christiansen bases this conclusion on the analysis of teacher attitudes as measured by the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory, a survey designed to measure how well a teacher can establish and relamaintain teacher-studewithin the classtionships room. He administered the test to 48 prospective elementary school teachers immediately before and during the last 10 days of their student-teachin- g experience. The study group included 14 student teachers preparing to teach grades four through six and 34 who planned to teach kindergarten grade. The third through t u d e n abandons many of his techniques because the principal and super college-learne- visor are judging him by how qu'et the classroom is, not by how creative the pupils are during their own, sometimes noisy, earning projects, he d wuuie puipoSe ui tins approach is the development of the individual, Mr, Christiansen said, adding, The long-hel- d belief that everyone should be studying the same things at the same time should be thrown out this only creates a senseless conformity and stifles development of individual talents and interests. Emphasizing that the modern approach is not permissive, he said the modern teacher has control of the students at all times and does not permit intentionally disrupting behavior even though the teacher using this approach may be found sitting quietly at a desk or walking around the classroom while students are working talking in groups or roaming to the bookshelf without having to ask for individually, Big Difference There Is a big difference in the noise a smart-alecmakes and the noise of serious study groups, he said, k noting, Absolutely anything with a permissive goes teacher. In submitting his thesis to the university, Mr. Christiansen recommended that similar studies be applied to other local student teacher groups to assess the significance of I s findings. He suggested that an analysis of subsequent studies by college curriculum planners could be used in judging the e f f ectiveness of current programs and planning future education teacher experiences. Mr. Christiansen said identification ard assessment of specific teacher attitudes would give more information as to the value of teacher training activities.
