Show 6C DESERET NEWS, MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1977 ri nwi ii k ?Vfj V7l UjvyjUIJ li ) Cowboys CentiBued from l sucn as Man Roy has won many awards of the West, and Father of the Year, and N C-- Roy and Dale received the Humanitarian Award from the National Film Society, the USO Libe.ty Bell Award for their appearances before the armed forces, and the Klwaais Decency Award. They .'re also members of the Cowboy Hall ot Fame. Married for 30 years and parents of nine children, six adopted, they are considered by many to be a model American family, exemplifying traditional values, and Roy declared at the press conference that his family has given him more satisfaction in life than anything else. Of course, it is dangerous to see your celluloid hero In person, especially when you worshipped that hero as a child. As an adult you see not the god but the feet of clay, and the experience can be disillusioning. But Roy bore up well. hat, a string tie, Wearing a white an American flag pin, and a gold ring in the shape of a saddle, he looked every bit the part of the venerable cowboy hero. Despite the plaid sport jacket and the bulkier build, the clear blue eyes, and the determined chin were intact. All that was missing was the and Trigger. Rogers was born 05 years ago as Leonard Slye on a farm outside Cincinnati. As a boy he taught himself to play the guitar, and when his family moved to California he formed a musical group which became the legendary Son of the Pioneers. Roy seems to prefer reminiscing about the past to commenting on the present. He recalls the first time he laid eyes on Trigger, the best horse that ever walked. A"sack of meal would look good on him. He picked Trigger from a studio lineup and never used another horse throughout his motion picture career. (Trigger died in 1965 at age 33.) I was the only cowboy that made all his pictures with that one horse," drawled Roy proudly. Trigger was the best thing that ever happened to me. Trigger now is immortalized, along with Dales horse, Buttermilk, and their dog, Bullet, in a fiberglass mold in the Roy Rogers Museum near their ranch in Apple Valley, Calif., where he breeds horses. Roy, who loves to hunt and fits it regularly into his busy schedule, also has placed his hunting trophies there, along with baby pictures of him and Dale and other memorabilia. Roy professes little Interest in current westerns (he did have some kind words for Bonanza), and prefers to watch ball games. His last movie was "Son of with Bob Paleface, in which he r i together six-gu- n '7A7( Kr,' in 0O0S " -- "- t Ka v- - ... , V' A v 0 , V. ) v wru til 'fol Regal heavy cast aluminum cookware FREE or at substantial discounts Youll love this cookware, so terrific it earned the Betty Crocker seal of approval.
