The Lord will not dwell in unholy temples, Elder Haight said. Everyone is involved in the church missionary program in some way, and young women have a vital role in the preparation of the young men, he said. "If you live worthily and develop a strong, of your divine role as joint positive inheritor of all things, you will be a blessing to the young men who come under your influence," he said. Elder Haight said LDS young women have a duty to serve the Lord and to honor womanhood "according to church beliefs and rot the world's." One of the most important obligations is to be and remain clean and pure. "When you are clean and pure, the young men you date will be clean and pure," he said. Asking young women to avoid the dangers of too much early dating, too much time together with young men and too late at night on dates, he said the youth of the church can stem the tide of untruth and immorality that is sweeping the earth. God's work cannot fail, he said, challenging young women of the church to do their duty in helping to present to President Kimball and the Lord young men who are worthy to be missionaries. self-ima- Elder Tuttle Gratefulness for people's generosity and a plea for mature couples to serve in developing nations were expressed by Elder A. Theodore Male. Tabernacle congregation by referring to his previous conference address in which he told of financial needs of local missionaries in South America. "I didn't really appeal for funds. I outlined a need," he said. "This is my first opportunity to express thanks to so many for helping these missionaries, even without being asked. I can't imagine what would have happened if we had actually asked for help." Elder Tuttle quoted from letters he had received, noting "they are as heartwarming as the stories of need." Acknowleging the financial need is not over. he said another exists in the deelcipirig countries, resulting from the rapid growth of the church in those areas. He said more than 140,000 converts joined the church last year. "With so many converts, the little branches grow rapidly. New leaders are called to positions of service early. They are able, but inexperienced in church procedures and administration," he said. These new leaders need to be taught to organize the church correctly and cause it to function properly, be said. He invited mature couples with church service background to help, urging those interested to contact their priesthood leaders to see if they are worthy for such missions. He also emphasized the importance of such couples being in good health. Elder Tuttle said the work such couples will will be challenging. disappointing and discouraging, but "in spite of the inconvenience, I can promise you one thing: supreme Joy." do Elder Tuttle of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy, drew chuckles from the Forgive, fellowship! priesthood exhoiated Willingness to forgive and a need to fellowship and inactive members were emphasized Saturday night by President Spencer W. Kimball. President Kimball spoke during the priesthood session Of the 147th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Also speaking during the meeting were President Kimball's counselors, President N. Eldon Tanner and President Marion G. Romney; Elder Bruce R. McConkic of the Council of the Twelve, and Elder Marion D. Hanks of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy. on foregiveness, President Kimball said, "All men should be able to forgive in their reavh for perfect in "This is hard to do, of course, but the Lord never promised an easy road." The church leader said "the Lord, himself, turned the other vheek. He suffered every indignity but uttered no condemnation." He said revenge seems to be natural to man but emphasized that "if we have been wronged, foregiveness means to blot it completely from our minds." President Kimball said the church must put 'veil greater effort fellowshipping youth so they do not become inactive and fellowshipping inactive adults so they can receive in full the gospel's blessings. Means Of doing these things include immediately assigning home teachers to new converts, giving added emphasis to the young men and young women programs, increasing responsibility of Relief Society ; officers te involve women and wiring families. prospective elders and "We cannot relax while many of our brothers and sisters and many of our young men and women are failing to participate in the blessings of the church," President Kimball said. "To be happy and successful, we must obey the laws and regulations pertaining to our activities," he said. "These laws will function either to our joy and g or to our detriment and sorrow, according to our actions." President Romney spoke of the importance of trusting in the Lord, using as examples of such trust the vanquishing of Goliath by David, the preservation in battle of the 2,000 sons of Heiman, as told in the Book of Mormon. and the experiences of former church president Heber J. Grant and of Randall Ells orth, a missionary who was injured in the Guatemala earthquake but who was able to walk again and return to complete the mission. "I know that the Lord rewards those who put their trust in him," President Romney told the priesthood members. Elder McConkie described blessings available to men who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. "This is the priesthood we hold. It will bless us as it blessed Melchizedek and Abraham," he said. By obeying the doctrines of the priesthood. he said. we can enjoy the words of eternal life here and now and be inheritors of immortal glory hereafter." Elder flanks said boys must become good men, and good men must realize that no accomplishment matters "if we have not done all we should at home." Failure to do so, said Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Council of the Twelve, only results in more unhappiness, misery, disappointment and failure to progress toward the things God wants for his children. Elder Packer gave this counsel to persons who are worried, whose lives are touched with disappointment, grief or bitterness or who struggle against constant worry, frustration and shame. 4,, , ' t- .k :..:: i. .. !e ' ... .'.? , 711 1 ''... 4 ''',I " ,.: ,,,,,,,v:::.,.:.::::!::-. Just as the rules must be followed to maintain good physical health, other procedures must be used to avoid spiritual suffering, Elder Packer said. He compared the mind of a person who is worried, filled with hate or other negative emotion with a vacant corner lot where everyone dumps trash. Just as owners of such lots must work to keep their property clean, so must the person plagued with a variety of mental concerns work to shake them, he said. Elder Packer counseled persons who have "festering gores, a grudge, some bitterness, disappointment or jealousy to get hold of yourself." "You may not be able to control things out there with others, but you can control things here, inside of you," he said. He said a significant message of the gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified by the title given to the Savior the Prince of Peace. If we follow him and seek the blessings of the Holy Ghost we can have peace individually and collectively, Elder Packer said. a"."1117r9 lit. 1 I, ..;, i , ,...,.aaa,-- 4. shadows create patterns on Temple Square Sunday as i. ; ' A ::::..:":::.::...';':..:?... President'Tanner said "all truth is discerned through the Spirit of Truth or the ightof Christ." But he said while that light is available to all mankind, it must be earned through righteous living. "This means we must know and understand and keep his commandments. Through the saving principles of the gospel, we can use the light in our lives to dispel the darkness of the world," he said. Powerful evidence of the contrast between light and darkness is found in the first vision of Joseph Smith when he uttered his prayer in the Sacred Grove in an effort to understand which church was right. President Tanner said the Prophet told how he was seized by thick darkness which seemed to threaten his destruction before he was released by the appearance of a pillar of light ' over his head. President Tanner said parents have a particular responsibility to teach their children the importance of following the light and avoiding darkness. "This applies to both spiritual and physical surroundings. It is a fact that most evil is perpetuated under cover of darkness," he said. "We are continually being warned to walk by the light of the gospel, living and teaching it to all the world," as the Savior admonished during his ministry: "Let your light so shine before ." men, that they may see your good works (Matt. 5:16), President Tanner said. 1 ....... 0i 1, , !: ,.k.aa.44.
