An 50 volunteers, including most of the building contractors from edstern Washington County, here Saturday morning. effort was the rebuilding of the The good-wi'Stout Home Center Warehouse, destroyed by an early morning fire Sept. 2. Most of the appliances and carpeting as well as the building were destroyed, according to Lel Stout, one of the two brothers who own and operate the business. The loss was only 15 percent by covered by insurance. Stout said the day after the fire, Bruce Hepworth. an electrical contractor, called him and asked, When arc you going to be ready to rebuild?" Still dazed. Stout didn't have an answer. The next day a cleanup crew of 25 to 30 volunteers arrived with trucks and loaders. They hauled away five truckloads of debris. During the next couple of weeks plans were made for the rebuilding day. During the past week posters appeared throughout the Hurricane area, reading: "A group of Hurricane City contractors are forming a volunteer crew of citizens to help at an 'Barn Raising' for Stout's Home Center, to get it back to its normal business. Anyone interested in helping with the project, be down at Stout's store this Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8 a.m. Bring your hammer and your energy. Thank you." Elton Stout, a building contractor in Las Vegas and another Stout brother, had lumber for the rebuilding hauled from California to the site. Friday, a welding contractor from St. George sent welders to put up the structural steel frame for the building. On Saturday morning the men came, bringing both energy and equipment. By 9 a.m. the work was well under way, and though there was no obvious boss, not a minute was wasted. of the Home Center, Boyd Stout, worked all night to be ready for the building crew. Stout Home say, "I am Center has carried me from job to job for years. They've carried all the builders in this area when we've needed it. Timmy Hunt, in his early 20s, a miner working near Gateway, Colo., was killed after a chase in ()lying two pickup trucks liedi the Utah-Colora- border. Being held in jail after voluntarily turning themselves in to law enforcement officers Sunday were Gaylen Lee (Duke) Winters, 35; Dennis Patterson, 29; Jack Corbin, 27, and Wesley Brewer, 22, all of Moab. The four are awaiting questioning by Colorado officials. Lawmen are not certain if the shooting took place in Utah or Colorado. Grand County Sheriff W.H. Bowman said Hunt and a friend purebPsed two cases of beer in Gateway Saturday night art,1 placed them in the back of Hunt's pickup truck. A short time later they saw someone take one of the cases and put it in another pickup. Hunt and his friend gave chase along back roads near the line, where the fleeing vehicle stopped. A rifle shot knocked out a heddlight on the Hunt vehicle and as the damaged truck began to turn around, a second shot was fired which struck and killed Hunt. The four Utahns, who had been staying at an elk hunting camp in the La Sal Mountain area, turned themselves into the Grand County sheriff the next day as posses were combing the mountain area and blocking roads. Sheriff Bowman said the four men and officials from Utah and Colorado would visit the site of the shooting to determine in which state the killing took Utah-Colora- place.
