Show 2C DESCRET NCWS, FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1976 Betsy, Abraham and Franklin Youngsters study historical figures By Pamela Metcalf Deseret News staff writer model of Abraham Lincoln. Fourth grade students at Burton Elementary in Bountiful have been learning this spring about the men and women who made America great. These students constructed papier mache models of their favorite historical heroes as part of the project. They chose celebrities from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, the Wild West, as well as modern times. Some of the historical figures were George Washington, Beniamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, Abraham Lincoln. Students equipped with rolls of newspaper, paint, yarn, and shellac set out to complete the task. I Curefully they molded newspaper into different shapes for the bodies. Drew Johnson added a little extra newspaper to the waistline of his papier tnache model to form the slightly overweight figure of Benjamin Franklin. Next the students added paint to the figures. Fourth grader Michelle Peterson painted a red, white and blue striped hat on her model, Betsy Ross. Then the fourth graders glued on yarn to make hair and beards for these miniature figures, and Tint Matthews made a black stove pipe hat for his tv "V p Graduate to Campus Casuals Whether you're planning to gt on !o nehoal, work or hnply Iww u summer of refreshing play. these purr roMon jay a print fashions h ('unipns Casual hi Inkv you them in great. sporting sty lr. Teachers Kathcc Richardson and Hazel Parrish said, The project resulted in rough hands and a messy classroom, but the kids loved it! The colorful figures stand about 10 inches high, and were on display at the North Branch of the Davis County Library in March, and the South Branch, in April. According to librarian Sandl Long, ' The papier mache figures are great, und a lot of people have stopped to admire them. The students wrote a short report to go alongside their patriotic papier mache models. Betsy Korilyn Campbell wrote: Ross was bom in 1752 In Philadelphia. 1 believe Betsy Ross was a great American because she made the first flag. Betsy Ross died in 1836. Student Drew Johnso;- - wrote: Benjamin Franklin w'as bom In 1706 in Philadelphia, P.A. I believe Benjamin Franklin was a great American because he invented electricity. Benjamin Franklin died in 1790." Fourth grader Tim Matthews reported: Abraham Lincoln was born in February, 1809. He was the 10th president. He wus shut at a theatre.
