Losses In the 15 years the famed smoke jump- ers have been leaping out of airplanes to put out forest fires the number of acres burned per year in the region they protect has slowly but surely been reduced of the until today it is about acreage burned before the smoke jumpers were organized Better communications and improved fire fighting methods of course contribute to the reduction in fire loss but the jumpers are credited with a large share of the victory They get to the fire in a hurry and fight it before it gets a big start So it was fitting that the Intermoun-tai- n Region Forest Service in Ogden should establish for the first time an awards system in recognition of the good work done by these rugged young men Through Boyd L Rasmussen assistant regional forester in charge of fire control pins were bestowed last week in ceremonies at smoke jumper headquarters in McCall Idaho Some receiving awards have made far more than 100 jumps In a day when young Americans are accused of being soft it is a revelation to see picked young men making themselves hard as nails and holding themselves in that condition so they can plunge into rugged forested areas to alight unharmed and physically able to work long and hard with hand tools to control forest fires It's a splendid service the smoke jumpers perf6rm in protecting our forest resources of timber forage and watershed values They are practical conservationists of rugged qualities in which intelligence initiative courage and physical excellence have their places It is good to know we have such young men and we wish them It seems very peculiar that two t important sets of records have mysteriously disappeared in the Sherman Adams-Bernar- d Gold-fin- e case One was the very crucial records in the Federal Trade Commission the other record in the office of the Secretary of State in New Hampshire regard- ing campaign contributions Significantly the "loss" of both sets of records was revealed the same week Acting chairman Robert of the Federal Trade Commission testified June 16 that the records of the wool inspection division between Jan 1 1953 and Dec 1 1953 accidentally were destroyed by the General Services Administration last January To anyone familiar with the red tape of Washington the destruction of files is almost inconceivable Right next door to the Federal Trade Commission is the archives Office Whirh Viae rhorcra of old files It and other government agencies are bogged down with files dating back beyond the Civil War The record of every American serviceman through every war has been kept by the Army and Navy 60 per cent of the space in the Justice Department Building is taken up with files while every file in every office has been microfilmed and stored away The General Services Administration in charge of this has prided itself on its efficiency in microfilming The wool inspection records for the year 1953 covered the period when complaints were made against Bernard Goldfine's mills for mislabeling It was in the fall of 1953 that Adams intervened at the Federal Trade Commission and that the case was abruptly dropped following his phone call Chairman Oren Harris of Arkansas chided Commissioner for the loss of the records but no real attempt was made to probe into the exact circumstances of the mysterious disappearance OTHER PAPERS The other set of papers destroyed was the record of political gifts and expenditures for 1948 1950 and 1952 in New Hampshire where Bernard Gold-fin- e was active politically They were dumped out by Secretary of State Harry Jackson on the excuse that he needed more space He did not however explain why he kept much older records but destroyed records for the year when Sherman Adams ran for governor 1948 and when Adams was first promoting Eisenhower for president 1952 Bernard Gold-fin- e has boasted about being a heavy contributor to Adams when he ran for governor Se-cre- st tian cotton broker had cornered 17500 bales
