Show Symphony Recaptures Mahler By George Raine Tribune Staff Writer The complete Gustav Maha m?n torn by internal ler struggles and veighted down by the worlds problems vvas captured by the Utah Symphony Orchestra Satur-ca- y evening in the Tabernacle on Temple Square as Maestro Maurice Abravanel conducted the tempestuous Sjmphony No. 9 in D minor Mahier wrote the symphony, his last, in 1909, awaiting death. And in that final moveMolto adagio, the ment, artist welcomes death as a sort of resolution. He has felt that life has dealt with him cruelly. He is a bitter, disappointed man. A most animated Mr. Abravanel was superb in interpreting Mahlers farewell. The symphony opens and c.oses with a slow melodic message. The first movement is raked with anguish while the fourth arrives at the mans sublime peace. But it is not a celestial peace; it merely speaks of ceath and not of eternal happiness. But it is only a joyous dance on the surface, while deeper it is filled with scorn written by an outsider. The laughing flutes in the first theme turn to biting sarcasm in the second. There are two principal ideas in the first movement, the first in the violins, the second in angry chords of the trumpets.
