Show v Frank A. Tinker II tah is about to have another TV star, even if lie does come from Idaho. On March 17, ABC will present one of its more ambitious projects, a r documentary entitled Three Young Americans In Search of Survival. One of the three will be Gary M. Smith, a lanky G 4 graduate student at Utah State Unhersity. Despite the someth it desperate title, the documentary actually carries the most practical theme possible: that of how various young adults are pointing their life woik toward those fields which eventually will determine whether or not the will and the world country remain habitable. two-hou- ONE YOUTH is involved with Gary Smith, Utah State University forestry student, shown here st.um-min- g his guitar, will play a feature role In a ABC documentary, March 17. M. Conservation On Parade a Utah state university student will take the nation on a lour of Utah's hack country Urban Renewal in Philadelphia, an area of effort which has become almost prosaic of late. In trying to save a city he may already be fighting for a lost cause, since the peripatetic to have seems American sloughed off traditional city life as an unnecessary evil. The distaff member of the three is a young woman deeply in immersed oceanography, with her immense laboratory the seas off the Virgin Islands. And she truly is working on sursome of the facts presvival ented show almost frighteningly that without increased harvest from the oceans we may all be grubbing for roots within a century. AS FOR GARY, he represents the conservationist and, as such, that part of youth trying to save what we already have rather than destroying it under one placard or another. Specifically, his field is the preservation and more rewarding use, through better administration, of the nations back counliy, its forests, rangelands, and deserts. Even more specifically, be is concerned about how this point should be made clenr to the Americans who use and appreciate such lands. In shooting the half hour or so of film dealing with Gary the ABC crew spent several weeks in Utah last a u t u m n. A sequence in Cany onloads shows him exploring caves, am tent Indian dwellings, an tin oi oiled deserts of this fantastic land, with an eye towards how it can be used for recreation or, mote important, sdmnlv saved. 1 THROUGH ALL the .story runs an almost mystic theme the love of land, both wilderness and productive, which must be the sustaining force In any sensible administration of the public domain. A feature which sharpens this impression of dedication is the music accompanying these scenes, songs composed by Gary and, in part, sung and strummed by him. Not quite a folk singer in the accepted term, Gary has focused his guitar - accompanied themes on the outdoors and its life Indians, wild horses, bikers, or just drifters. ABC has copyrighted several of his songs and is enthusiastic nltout their possibilities. Gary himself is refreshingly cynical about the whole business. Hey Dad," he chortles, if I make a buck out of it well have or buy some film, or a blast a boat. . . HE IS NOT, obviously, an actor or singer by trade. His background for this part is genuine.
