It takes a lot of different skills," Robert B. Allen says modestly. Mr. Allen is president and founder of the Allen Steel Co., a Salt Lake steel fabrication firm. He's also president of Steel Warehouse & Supply Corp. and Building Specialties Corp. Born in Salt Lake City on March 3, 1913, Mr. Allen attended East High School before entering the University of Utah. At the U. he majored in structural engineering. My initial ambition was to be an engineer," he recalls. After graduation, he joined Truscon Steel Co. at Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked for three years. He was then transferred by Truscon to Dallas, Tex. Leaving Truscon, he joined Mosher Steel Co,, where he headed the research and design department. He was working on the expansion of hangars for the Army Air Corps when he entered the military In 1942. Serving In Europe, Capt. Allen engaged in research for combat operations. Returning to the states in 1946, he was awaiting discharge when his father became seriously ill. Mr. Alien was given emergency leave to return to Salt Lake City and operate his fathers fabricating firm, Steel Engineers Co. When his father recovered, Mr. Allen started his own fabricating company because he preferred to stay in Utah rather than return to Texas. My father and I never thought the venture would be as successful as it turned out. But within seven years my company was as big as his. "When we found ourselves as friendly Robert B. Net industry shipments In the first 11 months of 1968 totaled 9.25 billion pounds, up 12.9 percent from the previous year, according to the Aluminum Association. There is some concern in the industry about the impact on aluminum demand this year from a tightening of the nations economy in the gov- market ernments battle against inflation, the American Metal Market, daily newspaper of the metal industry, said. Decline Unlikely John D. Harper, president of Aluminum Co. of America, said that despite the impact of high mortgage rates on home building, a key market for aluminum, a severe decline in this area was unlikelyNHe expressed the view that Washington would find some way to assure a reasonable level of funds since this mortgage area was very important from a social viewpoint.
