Show 3 Thursday, Dec, WEST VALLEY VIEW 25, 1980 BYU's First Bowl Win - Mustangs Stung By Incredible Cougars SAN DIEGO. In what will certainly go down as one of the most amaz- punt 84 yards to reduce the Cougar deficit to 3 ing finishes the gridiron sport has ever seen, Brigham Youngs Cougars finally captured a bowl victory here Friday night. The Y scored three touchdowns in less than four minutes to erase a deficit and defeat Southern Methoin the Holidist, day Bowl. g The tally actually came after playing time had elapsed - the center-sna- p from the Mustang 41 took place with three seconds showing on the clock. But that didnt prevent junior quarterback Jim McMahon lofting an aerial from the midfield stripe to senior end Clay Brown for the score that tied the game. It was almost axiomatic that sophomore kicker Kurt Gunther would then sidewind the extra point and give the Cougars their first bowl win in four tries. Browns catch in heavy end zone traffic was actually made in concert with an SMU defender. But possession is awarded to the offense in such a joint possession situation - and that spelled defeat for SMU. It was an unbelievable finish to a game that had all the earmarks of an easy Mustang victory for 56 minutes. The Dallas-base- d squad ran up a 19-- 0 lead before BYU got on the board for the first time - again on a remarkable catch by Brown that resulted in a TD play. SMU then waltzed to a 29-- 7 lead before Vai Sikahema returned a The Mustangs expanded their margin to in the third stanza and 5 were coasting at with 3:50 left to play 29-1- at half-tim- 38-1- 9 45-2- 46-4- 5, Pirates Outlast II. i M i? ;t I fireworks turned the tide. It was only the second loss for the Cowboys of the season, with the other coming against Granger in the Elko tournament. The key to the win, according to the victorious coach, was the balanced offense and the defensive play of Dennis Rupp against Grant-svill- e stalwart Greg Brown, who was MVP in the Elko tourney. Rupp limited Brown to four points in the first half and while he finished with 17, most of them came after the outcome was determined. Cyprus jumped off to a 0 lead and was never headed. The Buc press sent that to 1 at the half and it was after three. Guard Gilbert Romero had a new career high and it was a team high for the year. He finished with 27 points on 11x15 from the field and 5x7 from the line. He also dished out a half dozen assists. Sterling Cloward added 21 points on 8x10 from the field and 5x5 from the line. Rupp added 14 The and Huber 10. Pirates outboarded the with Cowboys Cloward hauling down seven caroms on each end of the floor and Huber grabbing a total of nine. Cottonwood was in the 16-1- I not quite draw even in a hectic fourth quarter. The Colts held a lead entering the e canto final before a couple of turnovers and a missed shot put them behind by four.
