This battle is complicated by the bugs inherited ability to develop immunity to chemical pesticides. For example, houseflies and cockroaches are now tougher to kill than they were a few years ago. Those repeatedly exposed to DDT, chlordane, dieldrin, or other such chemicals have gradully become resistant to these pesticides. They now thrive under conditions which formerly would have eliminated them, Dr. George F. Knowlton, extension entomologist with Utah State University in Logan, explains. Constant work on new control measures is needed. Yet, new chemicals cost millions of dollars to develop. Entomologists and Chemists are making progress, however; great numbers of new pesticides have1 been developed since World War II. More spectacular has been the use of gamma radiation in flies. controlling screw-worMillions of the male flies were sterilized by radiation and then released. Yet, as man advances in his war on insect pests, he must be aware of his myriads of insect allies. Pesticide control would cost us several times as much as it does ,now if it werent for the help given us by our beneficial insect predators and parasites, Dr. Knowlton explains. Some insects are our best allies in our battle against destructive insects They also make fruit, vegetable and other crop production possible with their pollen-atin-g work. On the roster of our insect allies. Dr. Knowlton includes: lady bug beetles, damsel bugs, minette pirate bugs, bugs, syrphid flies and their larvae, ground beetles, wasps, domestic honey bees and their wild cousins such 'as alkali bees, bumble bees and leaf cutter bees. big-eye- & GRAIN OGDEN, UTAH "A Register of Merit Show' Complete Junior and Open Class Show A Columbia and Suffolk Ewe Show and Sale Purebred Hereford Show and Sale Quarter Horse Show and Sale Swine Show Junior and Open Clnss Fat Division Aberdeen Angus Purebred Show and Sale Dairy Cattle Division Beef Shorthora Purebred Show ENTERTAINMENT FEATURES FOR ALL Make Plans Early to Exhibit or Attend P.O.
