Inferior ingredients? and Improper mixing ail toooften are the cause of faulty construction jobs on the farm, says Wayne B. Ringer, extension agricultural engineer with Utah State University, Logan.'--- . To get top quality, ingredients must be selected andr handled with care and mixed f properly. Clean gravel and sand are a must. The gravel may vary from Y. inch up to lVa inches and the sand may range from inch particles. very fine to For most construction jobs, three parts gravel, two parts sand, and one part cement make an economical mixture for general use. Thorough mixing is highly important. Every particle of sand and gravel should be coated with cement paste. Use clean water and just enough of it to wet the mixture enough so that it will flow and will fill all air pockets in the forms. Wetter concrete is easier to handle, but, extra water decreases its strength. When mixing your own, make a trial batch first, Ringer advises. Many people use ready-mix- , which is mixed very carefully to specifications at the plant. Avoid adding extra water to the mix when it is delivered. When cement is delivered, there is no time for delay, so be ready with the forms, tools, materials, and help needed, the agricultural engineer advises. Handle the material as little as possible to avoid causing the ingredients to separate. Agitate it only enough to remove the air pockets before it sets. 23rd ANNUAL SPRING RANGE BULL SALE 11:00 A.M.
