Photo by Emily Senkosky Allison Nicole Smith (Daynes), Sahara Hayes, Carlie Young, Ashley HorrocAs and Merry Magee prepare for their debut as the Leading Ladies. Assistant Editor The play Agnes of God will be the student-ru- n thefirst ever ater production to support the Rape Recovery Center. Leading Ladies, a theater production company created by Allison Nicole Smith, has more girl power than most. Taking on Agnes of God as their debut production, the company leads with the mission statement There will always be a woman force. The women of Leading Ladies did not know each other before starting the all-wom- en, production, but grew into a close-kn- it community soon after they started. The production company is all women for a reason, we wanted to have a safe haven where women could feel safe and always be real, Smith said. I would do anything for those girls. Smith, theater major, created Leading Ladies when she wasnt cast in Westminsters annual production. One of her professors told her, Sometimes you have to make the opportunities for yourself, and so she did. With her production company in place, Smith bought the rights to the hand-selectplay Agnes of God .She a cast of four women, and together the feministas got to work. Agnes of God really depicts how God exists in the world today, Smith said. Theater is the only place I know that can really bring these kinds of ised sues to life. Agnes of God is a play set around a nun who has a devout faith in God. When she gets pregnant through virgin conception, this confuses Agnes and makes her reevaluate her faith completely. This feeling that Agnes experiences is something Smith says a lot of women experience today, the feeling of lost hope. One in four women will get raped before they graduate, that means that one of the women involved with this production could be raped before they graduate, Smith said. I have a vision, a purpose and a voice you cant hold me back on a subject I have so much to say about. With this production, the ladies hope to spread awareness not only across campus, but as far throughout the community as they can. Rape just isnt talked about enough, said Merry Magee, of Leading Ladies. Its a real issue and I think that women and all people should stop suppressing it. As they raise both awareness and funding, the girls will be donating all proceeds from the production to the Rape Recovery Center. The center accepts any donations, big or small, they just ask to keep in mind that this center is the only place of its kind for the entire Salt Lake Valley. The Rape Recovery Center came ator There are many vegan places around Sugar House, but we are the only place - Just down the street from Westminster is Real Foods Market, a 100 percent organic grocery store and cafe.
