Show Westminster College's Since 1938 JANUARY 22, 2014 WWW.FORUMFORTNI6HTLY.COM Terrie Neiswender Staff Reporter In an effort to cut Student Newspaper costs and decrease paper waste, Westminster has implemented a new print policy. There is now one extra step when printing on campus. A step many hope will make people think twice. A small print job notification box will pop up, asking the user if they actually want to print and pay. Under the new policy, students will no longer enjoy unlimited printing. Each student received $25 in print credits totaling 833 black and white, double-side- d pages or 500 single-sideThe print policy is in its pilot phase this semester, which was designed to d. identify real challenges as well as solicit feedback. The pilot phase will also help work out technical problems or any other unforeseen problems. Full implementation is scheduled to begin June 4, 2014. For those who need to print more than the allotted amount, there is a way to request more credits during the pilot phase. However, once the policy is hilly implemented, students will have to pay for any additional prints. The new policy has been through many committees on campus, including the Technology Learning Resource Committee ASWC and the Executive team. Each group approved the policy after giving feedback and suggesting any necessary modifications. The software making all of this possible is Windows PaperCut. This technology tracks peoples print jobs, pages printed, how often people print, which printers are used and which departments are printing most, among other things. int pay-for-pr- VOLUME XLVII This information was valuable in determining what the print cap should be for students. According to Winter Morse, computer support and project manager, they determined determined the amount of printing that students are allotted by looking at the data pulled from Paper-Cu- t. The vast majority of students are under the print cap, said Kerry Case, director of the environmental center. According to Case, there are benefits to a printing policy such as this one. The economic and environmental benefits of this dont just come from shaving off the people who are printing out 6,000 band fliers, Case said. It also comes from making everybody more conscience of their printing. It drives down peoples printing across the board. Case said the benefits dont just come from eliminating extra printers, but from making all students more aware. That cuts print waste significantly, Case said. Most other campuses do this. Its a very common practice. The goal is to cut waste and increase responsible printing. Not to make it hard for people to do what they need to do for class. Network Support Specialist Ben Knorr said, The reality is, students will still be able to print what they need.
