A solution is currently in the works, and it is time to get on board. The program was not a decision. Papercut was implemented to help track and gather information on campus int ent Each student is awarded $25, which is 500 or single-side- d pay-for-pri-nt ' Think back to finals week. Massive lines at the library printers. Stacks upon stacks of abandoned paper. Angry students and frantic workers trying to sooth patrons. But dont worry, change is coming. As a library student worker, I see the behind-the-scenhorror of the printing fiasco on campus. People print entire books and leave them sitting on the printer to be recycled. Users get frustrated with the slow printers and print several copies of the same document. Of course, all of the extra eventually end up in the recycling bin next to the books pay-for-pr- CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Editor-In-Chi- j es SMYTHE EDDY Hillar Fowler i j EDITOR-IN-CHIE- F "t ' , i Printing Policy ltl printing habits about a year ago. In one year, the campus prints about 3.6 million pages. When Papercut came to Westminster, it brought more awareness with it: the print shop changed the default to instead print double-side- d of single, we invested in 20 recycled-conte- nt paper and many have reduced printing to the point they will come nowhere near exceeding the free amount awarded to us. These changes have made progress, but it is time for the next step: paying. Colleges similar to Westminster already have a program in place: Williams College in Massachusetts: 500 free prints, pay additional Vassar College in New York: $32.50 per semester (about 650 prints), pay $.05 for additional Lewis and Clark College in Oregon: 650 free pay-for-pr- int 833 double-side- d free pages prints, pay $.06 for additional So it seems Westminster is actually behind in the game. With the Mobile Computing Initiative (MCI), every student has been required to have a laptop in class. This has led to more and more professors using online resources instead of printing multiple copies of documents. For the professors who dont yet take advantage of this, this is your opportunity. Maybe this will be the push everyone needs to get on board. This change may actually make our lives easier. Imagine this: a joyful trip before class to the library. It is quiet. There is no obsessive printer beeping and you can find exactly what you desired when you wander over to the printers. No hassle. No lines. No frustration. Well, we arent there yet, but we are on our. way. Each Sage single-side- d will cost per page. To encourage printing double- sided, these prints will only costs '''.03 per page Right now, the program is still in the development stage. If students exceed the amount of free pages awarded to mem, they can request more through an online form and not be charged. CONTACT 1840 S. 1300 E.
