Show THE FORUM - ATHLETICS 9 JANUARY 4, 201 2 Have you heard about Hillary? Spotlight Column Hillary Fowler Contributing Writer students Many around campus talk about their idols or favorite sports stars. However, little is known about the people these stars are when the crowd and spotlight arent watching. Nationally, many , sports icons have been revealed as having a dark secret or past that was not necessarily honorable. Instead of exposing the secrets of students involved with sports on campus, I want to show more about the athletes at Westminster who continue to be stars away from the com- petition. My name is Hillary Fowler and I am a sophomore studying communication at Westminster College. As an aspiring journalist, I am interested in giving a voice to those that do not have one or are hidden in the darkness of the spotlight shining on those around them. I will be writing monthly articles highlighting individuals that have contributed in some way to athletics at Westminster College. As a former athlete, I hope to offer a unique view and insight on the various athletes that students support around the campus. In this column I will choose an athlete among the students at Westminster to highlight each month. This will give students a chance to learn more about the individuals that are representing their school. I will find out where the passion originated and what lies beneath all the competition and glamour. Westminster athletes performing courageous acts or going above and beyond the regular, expected duties are the types of students I am looking to highlight in this column each month. I hope to cover the stories of as many individuals as possible throughout the duration of this upcoming semester and help them get the recognition that is long overdue. Whether the individual led their team to a state championship, displayed quality sportsmanship or is simply a great teammate, I hope to spotlight students that do not always get the chance to be noticed within their sport and community. The athletes that score the most or lead their team to the most victories are consistently honored; I want to show those individuals that devote as much time and talents as these leading athletes but often go unrecognized. I was inspired to start this column when I realized that many college students have a team or player that they love and follow, but know little about these athletes at the individual levej. Women's Soccer 2011 Cal PacFrontier Tournament Gary Gonzalez Contributing Writer The Westminster womens soccer team had a landmark year which was capped off with winning the 2011 conference playoffs hosted at the schools campus. This marks this first time that the womens team has made the national playoffs in their five year history, a feat which the 28-year-- 2-- 1 over never accomplished.
