Show 6 ASWC FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM ASWC disbands inactive dubs Meet your senators Laura Ward Assistant Editor Nothing lasts forever, induding Westminster dubs. Disbanding inactive dubs has been a part of ASWC for a while, but its always happened to dubs that have been inactive for two solid years and dont have a current budget. Now, theyre looking at disbanding current clubs with rent budget. a cur- The main idea is sim- We want less clubs that are better, said junior Nick Raoux, director of clubs &, organizations. Raoux is looking at two or three current clubs to ple. disband. Raoux said the idea to look into disbanding active clubs started at an executive cabinet meeting. ASWC Executive Cabinet members were discussing how Westminster lists more than 70 dubs but not all of those dubs are serving the stu- dents. One of the main goals Raoux hopes this campaign will accomplish is making sure dubs are serving students through consistent activities and is good as there are many learning environments. Serving the students well is reliability, said Raoux. Clubs are serving the students well if they create a place where students can learn outside the classroom. Another goal is to improve active club funding. The unused budgets of inactive clubs will be applied to the General Fund, where active clubs will have the opportunity to apply for the extra money. I dont think its fair for dubs to tie up money when it could be used for the school, said Raoux. new people starting dubs they are not very serious about, said Eby in an email interview. If they are receiving a budget that they are not using, the club should be disbanded. However, Swim Club is one of the organizations that Raoux is looking at disbanding. Swim Club has a $380 budget. But, they havent used any of their budget money during the first semester, completed a service project or attended Inter Club This is especially true with a growing club com- Council (ICC) meetings. Eby founded Swim Club when he arrived at Westminster his first year. I started the club because munity. This year, we have more new clubs than ever before, said Raoux, whos had to look at roughly 13 new club applications. According to Raoux, there was a time ASWC was looking at three or four new clubs a week. Swim Clubs president, I loved swimming, said Eby. I felt that everyone should have the experience to wake up early, swim fast, be alert in the morning for their classes and get exercise. The club couldnt maintain its initial energy. There was never a lot to begin with because most sophomore Arthur Eby, agrees with this initiative. Disbanding some clubs people did not want to wake up at 6 a.m., which is when we started every day, said Eby. Activities lapsed when Ebys schedule became more complicated. Now that I am in advanced chemistry, physics and calculus classes, I have found less and less time to manage the club, said Eby. However, Eby is still interested in being part of the club if another student is willing to take the Bn mid-Januar- y. ever, anyone whos interested in taking over Swim Club is welcome to email Raoux at ASWCclubs westminstercollege.edu. I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona, but chose to come to Westminster for the small class presidency. Organizations like Swim Club wont be promptly disbanded without Westminster students getting a say. In order to find students who want to take over the clubs, they will be offered to the student body. Only after nobody from the student body has stepped up, can the club be disbanded through a Senate vote. A more complete list of clubs that could be disbanded wont be released Howuntil mi sizes and intimate campus. This is my third year serving as a Nursing Senator, and my first year as a member of the budget committee. In addition to serving as a Senator, I was involved with First Year Student Committee (FYSC) as a member my freshman year, and then as a my sophomore year. Activities outside ASWC that I participate in include volunteering with the Utah AIDS foundation, serving as a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and getting up to the mountains to ski when I can find the time. As far as my goals as a Senator this year, I have a couple that I hope to accomplish. First, I want to further the relationship between nursing students and ASWC. Nursing students are a very unique group of students and are at particular risk of falling out of the loop due to immense work loads and long clinical hours (not to mention commitments outside of school). To help assuage this problem, I want to create a deeper collaboration between ASWC and the Student Nurses of Westminster (SNOW) Club. By bringing these two organizations together, I hope to further involve nursing students in the plethora of opportunities ASWC has to offer. In addition, I want to spread the word and help promote a brand-ne- w program this year. The program is called the Nursing Peer Mentor program and was started by Rachael Elkins, a sophomore nursing student. The Peer Mentor Program consists of junior and seniors in the nursing program serving as mentors for the freshmen and sophomore students. selection the of to a nursAdjustment ing major and the anticipation of finding out whether one gets into the nursing program are both particularly stressful periods of time, and I believe that this program can make great strides toward reducing unnecessary stress.
