If all of your holiday decorations have been put away, but jovial jelly belly your Santa-lik- e, is still sticking around, this might be a good time to get off the sleigh and back on the fitness wagon. Yes, this is yet another ubiquitous health article about getting in shape this New Year. Every year fitness experts say the same thing, eat right and exercise. There is no secret or magic solution that we so desperately crave like mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving. This article wont give you any fitness secrets to live by, and it might not tell you any thing you havent heard before. What it will give you is different philosophies on being healthy from three local fitness experts and in- structors. All three instructors have different opinions about almost every fitness topic, but they did agree on one thing; there are two things that keep people motivated, doing something they like and exercising in groups. How to start exercising again after all the holiday slacking Veronica Bori, a certified Zumba (Latin-danc- e inspired aerobic exercise) instructor follows a conventional philosophy when it comes to starting a workout routine after a long break. Start where you are comfortable, where you know you are not going to come in and be too overwhelmed, said Bori. Although Bori says she is biased because she is a Zumba instructor, she highly recommends Zumba as an exercise format for beginners. She says its very fun and not too strenuous, so it is a good way for people to get into a fitness routine. Bori says people should start slow so they can build up and reach their fitness goals. Lynn Kilpatric, certified Crossfit (a strength and conditioning exercise format) instructor gives completely different advice when it comes to getting back into a workout routine. You dont have to start slow because you need the intensity to build muscle and lose weight, Bori believs that working out in a group makes workout the next day, your legs will become more sore because you have all the lactic acid trapped into your legs. Whether you want to take Boris advice and start slow, or fire jump into the as Kilpatric suggests, either approach can benefit by incorporating advice from Jane Drexler, another certified Crossfit in- said Kilpatric. Although Kilpatric says rest days are important because that is when your muscles and bones rebuild, she says taking time to recuperate after your first workout is not the right approach. After your first workout you are going to be sore. Do not take anytime off, come the next day and work out again, cautions fat-burni- ng structor. Drexler and the other instruc- tors say that working out with a group can be a good motivator. If you havent worked out in a long time, some people cant get back into it because its too boring or too lonely, said Drex- Kilpatrick. If your legs are sore from a workout and you dont ler. Drexler says it has to be fun, and that is why she recommends Crossfit. Crossfit is really fun because its a game. Everyday you come in and look at the workout and think, oh my gosh how am I going to do that today? and ev' eryone else is thinking the same thing. Working out can seem very lonely and Crossfit doesnt have that aspect to it. Everyone comes and works out together. Bori also believes that working out in a group has benefits. It might be easier to attain your goals when you are going to group classes with a friend and people who can motivate you, and you have the instruction from a teacher, said Bori. f i 1 r Diets: Moderation or Elimination? Kilpatrick also says its important to eat before and after your workouts. She says before you work out you should eat a little bit of fat, and a little bit of snack protein. If you eat a little bit of fat, your body will bum it and then it will go looking for more fat to bum. Kilpatrick said the best time to eat carbohydrates is after a pre-worko- ut meal should also include some protein to feed your muscles. Bori also recommends eating after a workout, but she cautions against eating late in the evening. Dont eat past 7:30 at night because its hard for your body to process that food when you go right to bed, said Bori. Fitness opinions and philosophies vary from person to person and expert to expert. In Salt Lake City, there is no philosophies. Bori recommends moderation and portion control instead diof what she calls hard-co- re ets, that eliminate foods.
