The Aero Club, National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) and Women in Aviation International (WAI) Club, help members build networks, gain leadership skills and give back to the community. Gail Avendano, director of Aviation, said the great thing about these clubs is they are run and organized by students. the community. Avendano said they have helped Boy Scouts get merit badges and have worked with the Southwest Airlines and program, Adopt-A-Pilo- t, the Navy Sea Cadet program. They participated in the annual aviation service project this year at the Wendover Air field on Aug. 25. They have helped with the renovations there for the past three years. Aero Club Women in Aviation The Aero Club is an organization for those who are interested in aviation. The club provides opportunities for students to develop teamwork skills, learn about aspects of aviation and attend several events. Chris Tiller, Aero Club president, stepped up to run the club this year. Matt Sykora, alumnus, was the vice president of the club. He said that in the past, the clubs main events were cook-ou-ts and movie nights. They also went to local airshows and fly in events. The most memorable event was going to Evanston airshow the first week of school as a freshman, Sykora said. Sykora said Aero Club helps about five Boy Scout troops each year gain their aviation merit badge. They teach them how aircrafts work, let them use Westminsters flight simulators and give them a tour of the east side of the airport. NIFA Club Women in Aviation is . The kids were most definitely excited, Minturn said. We got all of the kids to answer questions and they were able to discuss what they had learned that day. Our club gets our business done, but we like to have fun too, Minturn said. We love talking to anyone who wants to get involved in our chapter. C V Airplane models it, ., e. an international club, and Westminster is the Great Salt Lake Chapter. Julie Paasch, the clubs faculty advisor, said it is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing networking, education, mentoring and scholarship opportunities. Thomas Mintum, president of the chapter, said joining the chapter is free. Mintum said the club has approximately 15 active members. Well take whoever wants to come and participate, Minturn said. Everyone there is passionate about aviation and if someone wants to come be passionate with us then the more the merrier, Minturn said. The NIFA Club is a national club for those wanting to have a career in aviation. They compete against other schools, once in the fall for regional and once in the spring for nationals. For several years, they have gone out of state to compete on a national level. The club won the Loening award, which recognizes the top collegiate flight program in the country, in the 2007 Ohio National Competition. Avendano said the competition is like a track meet for pilots. Events involve both ground and flying. NIFA will be unable to go to the May 2012 national competition in Kansas. Avendano said fall they plan to compete in the 2012 regional competition next for the year in order to qualify 2013 national competition. The club also engages in The chapter also does various sendee projects that are geared toward aviation, Minturn said. They volunteered at the Day of Service and Learning on Oct. 7. Avendano said the kids were very enthusiastic about it. The event was wonderful, Minturn said. I can say that the volunteers got just as much out of it as the kids did. Amanda McIntyre, a senior who was involved in planning the event, said the kids really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.
