Rita Okumu, sophomore, is a student assistant for the CRC. Okumu says she plans on attending the upcoming science seminar. Im going mainly for the advice at the end, said pre-me- d Okumu. Okumus interest in chemistry was sparked after attending chemistry exploration seminar last year. She said the seminar was informative, and professors in different fields of chemistry spoke about their experiences and research. She ultimately changed her major from biology to chemistry. Ai Fan, another student assistant for the CRC, attended the Career in Finance seminar and the Personal Statement tool helped out tremendously, said Negrete. Caldwell says communication skills, leadership skills and motivation are what employers look for in potential employees. I think our students have good communication skills, but they need to be able to prove their skills to employers, said Caldwell. He added that students can prove these skills through their interviews and resumes. The National Association of Colleges and Employers also lists communication skills at the top of its Employers Wish List in its 2009 Job Outlook. Caldwell and Rebecca Richard, career services coordinator, both stressed that when students come into the CRC their individual needs will be worked with. Our office looks at each person as an individual, said Richard. We see where they are now and what they need to move forward. The Career Resource Center is located in the Shaw Student Center room 101 and is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to to 6 p.m. Call make an appointment or just stop in.
