The Opportunity Fund pro- vides funding for students who are interested in attending a unique academic event. For example, in August 2011 six students were awarded Opportunity Fund money to go on a literacy building trip to Wai, India, according to a budget spreadsheet provided by Megan Mann, ASWC director of budget and finance. The press release for the trip says, Students, faculty and staff will travel to Wai to work directly with local students and to help equip teachers with effective teaching and learning models. Laura Wolf, ASWC senator of pure and applied sciences and Opportunity Fund budget committee member said, Every opportunity that we think reflects what the Opportunity Fund is about gets approved. The committee is comprised of two faculty members and five students. The faculty members are Trisha Teig, director of student involvement and leadership, and Tim Dolan, coordinator of national fellowships in the Provosts Office. One student member is Mann. The other four students include two students senators and two students at large. Mike Price, senior, is a student at large in the committee. He said a student at large means hes not a senator or involved with in anyway. The official Opportunity Fund handout says the fund has a yearly budget of $10,000. $5,000 of the budget is from ASWC and the other half is from the Provosts Office. The budget spreadsheet said $5,969 has already been used this fall semester, so there is now $4,679 left until the end of spring semester. ass-wa- ck Denied The Opportunity Fund handout says, Students should apply for funding if the money will be used to pay for preparation costs, registration costs, travel costs, lodging, or food expenditures for attending an academic conference, attending a significant professional meeting, conducting research, engaging in the service of others, or any other event that shall significantly advance the students academic, profes- sional, or personal growth. Teig said the opportunity must be beneficial to the student. It has to be something that the student can bring back in an educational sense to the rest of the Westminster community. This is exactly what Corinda Santos, junior, was trying to get funding for. Santos is an unpaid Forum reporter, and about a month ago she was unexpectedly invited to attend a newspaper conference in Orlando with the rest of The Forum staff. Her application was denied by the committee. We must be accountable and have an open and accepting environment. We are not a 1. 1 clique. 2. To work toward a more environmentally friendly and campus, supporting actions that allow it to happen. This includes support for the biking community of Westminster. 3. To leave my door open to any student who has a question or concern, and act to the best of my ability to represent his or her interests. SLCC Student Senator Will Decker said, Nick is one of the nicest, best all-arou- nd human beings I have ever known. I found him to be very proactive about his beliefs and he genuinely cares about the needs of those around him and the world at large. He is a true friend and always finds the nicest way to handle criticism or negativity he doesnt agree with. When he was with Student Life and Leadership at SLCC he always pulled his weight and was a willing participant.
