Eventually, they ended up at a hotel. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in the seven counties affected by the fires. President Bush signed an order declaring a federal state of emergency on Oct. 24 and toured several of the damaged communities the next day. Thousands of firefighters from all over California and several surrounding states have mobilized to fight the flames. Utah has sent several crews, including one from Cedar City that is specially trained to fight forest fires. The National Guard has also been deployed, as well as Marines from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, which is also in the fires path. Many of the men and women battling the blazes are themselves evacuees. Nearly one million people have been ordered out of their homes and businesses since Oct. 21. It has been described as one of the largest mass evacuations in United States history. Many of these evacuees, like Ramundo and her family, relocated to Qualcomm Stadium, where the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as charitable organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints is tending to their physical and emotional needs.
