Although not all students use this resource, academic advisers are available to help. There are two kinds of academic advisers. The first type of adviser is the peer adviser. A peer adviser is available in the START Center. Peer advisers are fel- low students who are there to help students. They help students decide what classes they need to take and can suggest the best sequencing for classes. Their goal is to help students graduate on time. A student will find that peer advisers have experienced the same classes, professors and deadlines that other students have. By sharing the same experience, peer advisers can help students find the solutions to their problems. The next kind of adviser is the faculty adviser. A face, professor. While a peer adviser is beneficial for helping students with their Liberal Education classes, a faculty advisers responsibility is to help students fulfill their major requirements. They also clarify college policies and procedures and discuss career options. full-tim- on-camp- Currendy at Westminster, there is a pilot program for advising freshmen. One Learning Community is taught by faculty members Jennifer Simonds and Georgia White. Together they share 25 students. Normally faculty advisors do not start advising students until the students have a junior standing. However, this program is to provide mentoring and extra support for incoming freshmen. Advising earlier in a students academic career may gready affect the relationship the student experiences at the college and may help to encourage students to continue their education at Westminster. When wanting to speak with an adviser, the first thing a student must do is make an appointment. Students can arrange an appointment with a peer adviser at the START Center by contacting the office at Or if students want to speak with a faculty member, they need to contact a faculty adviser from the department in which they are receiving their major. 832-228- 0. us m Classified Ads Canyon Sports, voted 1 ski Aboard rental shop in Utah is hiring an outside sales and marketing individual. Jennifer Simonds Assistant Professor of Psychology Once the appointment has been made, it is helpful for students to consider their academic and career goals. After this step, an adviser can help go over these goals with the student. Before attending the appointment with an adviser, each student needs to go over the Academic Catalog, the class schedule, major and declare a major. If a major has not been declared before the next registration after meeting the required credit hours, then a student will not be able to register for classes. To declare a major, it is necessary to pick faculty advisers. A faculty adviser needs to be picked for both a students major and minor. The forms for declaring a major can be found in the START Center or in the Office of the Registrar. Students who are ready to graduate need to apply for graduation two semesters prior to the expected completion date. Students can graduate in December, May or August.
