Show Faculty Art Exhibit opens to small crowd Craig Glidden's return considered a highlight by students and other faculty Wesleyjarman Staff Writer It was a possible fashion faux pas. Some eavesdroppers also thought it was funny. The situation was a perfect Of all Westminster faculty displaying art at this years Faculty Art Exhibit, it seems nobody was as well as received as faculty member Craig Glidden. He hasnt displayed art at the exhibit for the last couple of years and the tide of his work, Medicinal Research Drawings, could be a window to the answer why. Its great to see Craigs art, said faculty member Kristina Lenzi, who is also displaying art. We have missed him. Its Lenzis third show and she hopes that many people will attend to see all the artists work during the weeldong exhibit. She was present along with a small crowd at the exhibits opening reception held in the evening of Oct. 22 in the Tanner Atrium. It was a casual reception with few attendees. An hour into the show, the spread of refreshments appeared not to have been touched. Come on, eat some more food, said art faculty member David Baddley to some students passing by the table. People were in derby-sty- le hats, skirts, dresses and shorts. Three other women were laughing that they all wore similar black leather jackets. Westminster art majors Candice Rigtrup and Amelia Davis, who have been some of Baddley s students, casually took in all the exhibits on opening night. Its so good to see Craig Gliddens work again, said Davis. Rigtrup agreed and said, I think it is all a great show. Westminster senior Kathryn Ferguson walked around with a large-fri- ll backpack. She was just getting a break from exhibitor Anthony Sicilianos photography class. She enjoyed most of the art. I either like it or hate it, she said. She wanted to purchase one specific piece from her professor. It was titled Fallen. I think it is really cool that this is all from the faculty and its great for students to see their artwork, she said. Ferguson has not attended many of the art shows in the past and she believes that she may not have attended if it werent for Sicilianos photography class. I am not surprised by the small crowd; art is underappreciated. Some of Baddleys photographs were taken during a class he was teaching in Foster Hall. Three of them were taken within five seconds of each other, said Baddley. He explained that they were all taken within the last five seconds of sunlight. They were taken when there was just a sliver of the sun left. Baddley appreciates all the artists and expresses his opinion of some of their work. I appreciate work that is simple and subtle. He points to faculty member William Emerichs depictions of brick Emerichs work is inspired by architecture from the small town of Chillicothe, Mo. Speaking of his brick paintings, Emerich said, They resemble the sound of car noise bouncing off the brick walls. Emerichs three depictions are filled with texture and look real, not painted. Part of its memory, but not direct representations of Chillicothe, said Emerich. Its just how you can remember the space. Emerichs other pieces have heavy shadows in contrast to defined light. He has been a faculty member at Westminster for about one year. I immediately felt comfortable here, he said. There is a real personal attention to students. The Faculty Art Exhibit is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will continue until Nov. 20. Students, other faculty and some relatives were expected to attend. Lenzi was expecting her crowd to attend throughout the shows schedule, which will continue through Nov. 20. Lenzi teaches three drawing classes and some of her students were also in attendance. This is a great venue. I love Davids photography, its beautiful and subtle, said Lenzi.
