To what extent has the rising cost of living eaten into the income gains it has chalked up? Locally, the figures show, the financial picture is a rosy one. h'amily earnings have been rising at a much faster rate than the cost of goods and services. As a result, the average production worker in in much better shape than he was in previous years. His weeks pay goes further in the market place than it did formerly. Just how it shapes up, taking into account both increased earnings and higher costs, is brought out in surveys made by the Tax Foundation, by the Department of Labor and others. They show that the average working man in Carbon County now earns enough after 33 minutes on the job to buy a pound of round steak, best grade, or the equiva- ate NEWSPAPER Thursday, March 10, 1966 j Who is Delinquent? However, it amounts to less, in terms of his working time, since his wages have gone up more than 14 percent. The figures show that per capita income in the local area is 22 percent higher than in 1958. As a result, local residents have greater buying power than before. For example, a mans wool suit, good grade, can now be bought with 39 hours of work and an automobile tire, size 7.50 x 15, with about 13 hours. These items, and most others, would have cost considerably more, in terms of ASSOCIATION LOCAL CIGARETTE BILL $401,000 A YEAR Residents of Carbon County have returned to smoking in a big way. Despite the steady barrage of medical reports in recent years linking cigarettes with cancer, heart disease and other ailments, they are puffing away at a record rate. For a time, following the Surgeon Generals 1964 report on the hazards of smoking, there was a marked drop in cigarette consumption, locally and elsewhere. Some people swore off completely, some cut down on the number they smoked and some turned to cigars or pipes as a sub- effort, seven years ago. The Tax Foundation shows, in a special study, how much time is spent by a man (married with typical $10,000-a-yetwo children) during an eight-hou- r day, to provide for his familys various needs. It shows that he must work 2 hours and 19 minutes to meet the tax bills, 1 hour and 30 minutes for housing and household costs, 1 hour and 16 minutes for food and tobacco, and 39 minutes for transportation. The rest of the time goes for apparel, 31 minutes, medical, 21 minutes, recreation, 18 minutes, and all others, 1 hour and six minutes. As a result, cigarette sales in the United States, which were at an high of 524 billion packs in 1963, dropped to 511 billion in 1964. During the past year, however, most of the converts weakened in their resolve and took up where they had left off. They helped boost cigarette output to a new 532 billion. record In Carbon County, an estimated packs of cigarettes were smoked in 1965, on the basis of regional statistics compiled by the tobacco industry and national data from the Department of Agriculture. This was at the rate of 104 packs a year for every person in the local population over the age of 18. As a comparison, the average in the United States as a whole was 216 packs. In the Mountain States, it was 192 packs. Government health officials hope that the new law that requires a label on each pack of cigarettes warning that smoking may be hazardous will be effective. However, they dont expect any sudden tapering off. It will take at least ten years to bring about a real change in consumption, they feel. Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths among males, can be avoided in at least 75 per cent of the cases by a simple precaution: Dont Smoke. Statistics revealed by the American Cancer Society show that the incidence of lung cancer is ten times greater among people who smoke cigarettes than among For teenagers and others who havent yet fallen victim to the smoking habit, the lesson is clear: Dont Start. For the inveterate smoker who finds it difficult to kick the habit there is real incentive to quit. Five years after stopping, the risk of getting lung cancer is reduced 50 per cent. Ten years after stopping, former smokers have as good a chance as of escaping this disease. How serious is the menace of lung cancer? This year an estimated 47,000 persons in the U.S. will die of it. More men will succumb to lung cancer than from automobile accidents. Of 100 who contract the disease this year, only five will survive in five years. and other findThese sobering facts Generals the from Report Surgeon ings are being brought to the attention of local residents by the local unit of the American Cancer Society.
