Show 18, 1952 Thursday, September THE Tte Grand Junction Opener Proves Dino Eleven has Faults to be Eliminated The Carbon high school Dinosaurs displayed their present and potential talent before a capacity crowd of chilled spectators last Friday night and although they 0 managed to reap a hard-wo- n victory over the Grand Junction Tigers it was a victory which failed to enthuse because of the many flukes perpetrated by the Carbon backfield. Everyone who follows Carbon football was aware of the fact that Coach Jackson Jewkes was going to have some difficulty in molding a 'backfield after losing three of the spark plugs from last years championship combination. The game Friday indicated that much more shaping has to be done if the Dinosaurs expect to compete on an equal basis with the Big Eight teams of the Utah circuit. Dominic Albo, who drew the assignment as quarterback, was on and off both in calling plays and executing them. In the T formation used by Carbon the quarterback is the key man and if he falls down the whole show may stand. just as well be a one-nigAlbo seemed to lack confidence as he .passed the ball to the other backfieldmen on the various plays. It looked as if he were trying to get rid of the ball no matter what and in several instances, more than we like to recall, he failed to get the ball into a position where it could be taken by his support. The .passes were either too high or too low and much valuable time was lost in ball recovery before the plays could function smoothly. During this past week and next prior to the opening of the Big Eight conference against Granite Coach Jewkes is spending a lot of time in getting the timing of his backfield more exact. This work lies in developing the entire backfield to work as a unit with each man drilled in the position required by the respective plays. The Carbon line, which, without fear of contradiction, can be said to have loads of talent, also needs some gearing up in the The line charging department. showed up good defensively Grand Junction but was slow in getting under way to op- - Increased License Purchases Bring More Hunt Queries Increased purchases of 6-- hunting licenses at this season also finds an increase in question in regard to the qualifications for the purchase of such licenses. A fact that was apparent in several instances. With these kinks ironed out by September 26, the Granite Farmers may well again be the first stepping stone for the Dinosaur climb to Big Eight honors. Page PORT Dove Hunt Attracts Carbon College to Many More Open 1952 Grid Hunters this Year The recently concluded mourning dove hunt saw nearly double the scatter - gunners afield compared to the first hunt held for these fine game birds a year ago. Reports from the game wardens and other field men also show that there was an ample supply of birds in all 15 counties opened to shooting. It is believed that this hunt will soon be one of the most important on the agenda of Utah gunners. With the ever increasing pressures in all hunting fields, the dove hunt is proving a welcome addition to the sportsmen of Utah. Field men report that the general reaction of those afield for the first time was en thusiasm for more such hunting. It was described as the fastest of wing shooting by most of the sportsmen who were contacted. Utah annually raises a bumper crop of mourning doves in many sections of the state. Continued seasons of good hunting for these birds seems likely for the future. Wars with Weber The Carbon College Golden Eagles are priming for their first game of the season, a Friday night date with the Weber Wildcats at Ogden and Coach Jimmy Mullins is making up for lack of numbers by rugged drill and willpower. ' With his squad numbering 24 men, Coach Mullins is going to depend upon every man and there will be no such thing as cutting to cut the number down to a workable group as is customary when a larger number of players turn out. Returning to the fold from last years squad are Jackie Woodard, Nicky Nelson, Ramon Ellis, Charles Madsen, iMel Wall, Sammy Juliano, and Dean Dennison. This group will be bolstered with the addition of Tommy Tasker, Jay Herring, Harry Abeyta, Don Nelson and Robert Cones from last years Carbon high state championship team.
