The project has concentrated on the Gooseberry area in Salina Canyon and has rendered some very interesting results. Much of the work was done by a grduate student Kreig Rasmussen, of Salina, and an assistant from BYU as well as wildlife biologist Don Beal from the DWR. Over 30 elk calves were captured and fitted with radio transmitters. The ani- mals were then tracked and moni-- . toredforseveralmonthsduringtheir early development. A cow elk with calf will find a suitable place to leave her calf while she spends most of the day feeding. Frequently, the cow will return to . her calf at this bedding site to nurse, and then return to her own feeding activities. It is the aim of the project to determine what specific needs exist for. these bedding sites. It has been found that bedding sites tend to be found around water based ares that are surrounded by old growth quaking aspen with large amounts of downed timber. It is thought that these areas offer the best combination of forage, shade and security for both the young elk and its mother. Projects such as this provide information to biologists and land managers that can be used to base future decisions. There are still many questions that remain unanswered concerning wildlife. Indeed, every question that is answered seems to create new ones to investigate. That is what makes the field of wildlife biology so intriguing.
