All too often, the good old days are eulogized over campfires year after year. Fond memories have a way of getting better until recollecwith every tion bears little resemblance to fact Twenty years ago, Utah sportsharvested men 71,631 bucks. We took only 56,658 in 1992. Thats a considerable downturn. If youre looking for a great American success story, take a look at Utahs elk herds. Hunters killed 1,896 bulls' in 1972 compared with 7,3984 in 1993. Right now we have the best elk hunting in Utahs history. Antelope herds in the Beehive State have shown an equally dramatic increase. Twenty years ago, hunters took only 198 pronghorn bucks. Last year 720 were harvested. Quite a difference. Drought notwithstanding, were seeing a lot more of these fleet footed critters racing across the desertscape. The moose harvest has risen from 7 1 bulls in 1972 to 197 in 1992. Some areas have more moose than Classifieds Work! Call Call habitat - and transplants are initiated every year to spread out the surplus. Twenty years ago there was little very hunting opportunity for Desert or Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep or Rocky Mountain goats. In 1972 only one desert bighorn was harvested and permits for Rocky Mountain bighorns and goats were nonexistent Last year trophy hunters scored on 13 rams and eight goats, and prospects are good for ever greater numbers of permits. Utahs big game has had its setbacks and continues to face dramatic challenges due to shrinking habitat increased demands by recreational hunters, and conflicts with other land uses. Still, hunting opportunity has come a long way in the past few years. In fact, these just might be the good old days youll be reminiscing about twenty years from now.
