Most students at Cedar Ridge are those whose life circumstances put them at risk of school failures unless some intervention took place, according to principal Randy Brown. These circumstances include pregnancy, or inability to settle into the regular high school expectations; some students have learning disabilities, or family problems that prevent them from attending school. At Cedar Ridge, we believe that all students can learn, given time, opportunity and effective practices, said Brown. To meet the needs of the students and to involve the community in education, there are twelve other programs and services available through the school that make it a focus of learning for the entire county. The computer lab becomes a great place for Indian students at Richfield Residential Hall to receive tutoring. Summer school is available, and the lab is open to the community for computer-assiste- d learning. Adult Basic Education classes arc offered for those earning credit toward high school diplomas. Instruction is offered for those preparing to take the GED exam, which provides five units of credit toward high school completion. Adult driver ed is also available. English as a second language is also based at Cedar Ridge. Volunteer tutors give practical language experience, and a computerized language learning system lets them listen, respond and hear how they sound as they learn to speak, read and write English. Volunteer activities in district schools are organized by Ronna at-ri- Leyba, director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, also located at Cedar Ridge. Dixie Carter coordinates the Parent and Child Enrichment (PACE) Center at Cedar Ridge, focusing on High School offers for everyone helping parents strengthen their skills and fortify their family life. Young parents attending Cedar Ridge learn how to prepare their children from infancy to be ready for school, and parenting skills can be strengthened through a library of child development materials and seminars on various related topics sponsored by PACE. Brown says one of Cedar Ridges greatest strengths is its connection with Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center. Skills learned there can fill requirements for a high school diploma, but can also lead to There were 27 people attending the Roast Pork dinner on March 18th. What we looked like when we left the house reflected directly upon them. We had to kneel down to show that our skirts touched the floor. And the types of pants to wear was no problem. Pants for girls at school were not allowed. And makeup. Well, that was for girls who didnt know how to pinch their cheeks and bite their lips for a little extra color. (Never mind our colors were black and blue cheeks and bloody lips.) My husband, Ruel, tells me that the stylish confrontations with his parents centered mainly in the over-th- e collar hair and beards. He also remembers philosophical arguments about the morality of frayed jean hems and something about engineer boots being too groovy. When we got older, we got bolder. A whole generation did, apparently. The revolution came, and schools allowed girls to wear pants . (one year before I graduated). Boys werent sent home for trims. People eventually stopped seeing clothes as radical political statements and saw them as mere fashion statements. And being part of the generation that witnessed the wardrobe war, saw the surrender and toasted the transition, I solemnly swore, as many of us did, that when I was a parent, I would respect my childrens rights to wear what they dam well chose. Which doesnt quite explain why I had the irresistible urge to rip out my sons ear when he carelessly stuck an earring in it one day. Or why Im embarrassed when son belts his pants so the other my crotch hangs down to his knees. Or why it bothered me the week he and com- munity support He said Cedar Ridge enjoys giving back to the community. Think spraying delayed dormant spraying. Timing is very important for this spray, according to Bill Varga, Utah State University Extension specialist and director of the Utah Botanical Garden in Farmington. A properly timed and applied dormant spray will greatly reduce pest populations which can develop - SPECIAL later in the season when control is more difficult, Varga said. Primary targets for dormant spray are eggs and adults of scale, aphids, and mites. However, he cautions not to use dormant spray after plants have blossomed or leafed out. Because dormant spray kills by smothering, Varga says thorough coverage is essential. in different Pests over-wintthe soak so tree of every bud, parts twig and limb, he emphasized. Dont spray the main part of the trunk because predator, or good, mites overwinter there. It is important to conserve these predators to preventmite problems later in the season. He said it is probably best to prune first and then apply the dormant spray. This way you will use less spray and it can be applied more efficiently. Spray oil and diazinon is a dormant spray he recommends. Some tips on choosing tax preparer If you have decided to get professional help to prepare your income tax return, the Internal Revenue Service has some suggestions: Select someone, or a firm, that will be available if you have questions about the preparation of your tax return month, or even years, after it has been filed. Avoid any tax practitioner who claims that he or she can get you a larger tax refund that another practitioner, or those whose fees are based on a percentage of your refund. Take the tax package you receive in the mail to your practitioner so he or she can use your forms. He she should also use your peel off identity label and the envelope provided by the IRS. Be sure your preparer signs your return. You should receive a copy of the completed return. Never sign a blank return. ; Be sure you are satisfied with the prepared return. It is still your tax return. You are responsible for its contents. Consider filing your return electronically which will save about three weeks in processing time. The ERS cannot recommend a specific tax preparer. If you cannot afford a professional preparer, IRS trained volunteers are available throughout Utah. And when I open my mouth, I hear my mothers voice saying, Dont you dare leave the house looking like that... When I was a kid, may parents would never stand for...What you look like says a lot about what you value and respect...Its a direct reflection on us. Palmer, Urinary Incontinence. Question: Isnt urinary incontinence in the elderly always due to some physical disorder? Ive heard it could be psychological, but that seems pretty far out Answer Urinary incontinence not may always be due to a physical disorder. Many older adults experience an emotional breakdown similar to that experienced by prisoners of war in Korea. As the meaning of life eroded, the prisoners stopped caring about personal hygiene and began to soil themselves. Also, some elderly people receive behavioral messages from caregivers that incontinence is acceptable. The incontinent adult is rewarded with attention and touch by staff members while soiled clothing is removed. Therefore instead of being rewarded for maintaining continence and independence, older adults are encouraged in obvious and subtle ways by caregivers to become dependent and lose continence. In an institutional setting, an individual relinquishes control over many bodily functions - when to eat, to bathe, to sleep, etc. In such an environment, incontinence may be viewed as a means to exert control over a bodily function. The individual can decide when and were to urinate, whether appropriate or not. -- Urinary incontinence can be seen as an expression of hostility and resentment over the loss of control in ones life. It can also be used to demean by exposing the caregiver to the task of cleaning soiled body parts, clothing and furniture. Temporary confusion associated with a relocation or change in environment can lead to the development of urinary incontinence. The individual unable to locate a bathroom in unfamiliar surroundings is at risk of acquiring transient incontinence until becoming oriented to the physical layout of the environment. An individual unable to comprehend directions to the room or articulate the need to void may become incon- tinent. Depressions is frequently as- sociated with incontinence. When an individual has clinical symptoms of depression, urinary incontinence can occur. In a situation in which an individual fees no hope and no meaning in life, physical appearance and hygiene can suffer.
